Review Summary: If you like myself was anticipating something along the lines of their self titled, you might be as let down as I am by Nightmare.

I much like the rest of the music world commend Avenged Sevenfold on returning to the studio after the loss of their drummer James Sullivan, but the music speaks for itself, the band just wasn't the same without him. After listening to the entire album from start to finish I cannot help but think that the album would have been different with the Rev keeping the time. All that aside the album has some very good songs, but the majority of songs just don't cut the mustard for true Sevenfold fans. Though the writting on the album is spectacular, they leave more to be desired in some aspects.

The titled track Nightmare has an errie and dark begining which sounds sorta like it's coming from some dark music box which is cool. The guitars come in heavy with harmonizing riffs that are classic Avenged Sevenfold tones. The drums are fast and aggressive. The vocals are strong and again are classic, resounding the vocals of City of Evil and Waking the Fallen. The album starts off very strong and is quite promising. Track 2, Welcome to the Family, is another great song with strong drums and guitars. The first two songs are impressive to be honest. Tracks 3-6 are in my opinion not the best work from A7X, they are driven my piano music and are even slow at some points. Dont get me wrong pianos and slower beats are all well and good but they are in a stark comparison to previous songs featured on City and Self titled. These tracks are sorta hard to get through but hang in there because God Hates Us is probably the biggest kick in the ass I have ever heard. The song starts slow and seems to follow suite of the previous tracks. The guitars without notice start super heavy and distorted, it almost takes the wind of of you. The vocals start in and are classic M. Shadows, until the chorus. The screams heard on waking the fallen creep back. Finally they are back and they are so brutial its almost unbelievable. The breakdown towards the end of the song again hits with so much power, it hails back to the Sounding the Seventh Trumpet days. God hates us is the best song on the album by far. After track 7 the remaining tracks are simialr to the rest, rather slow but still decent.

The album on the whole is still good, but is lacking what I was expecting. Still give it a listen, if you are a new Sevenfold follower you just might like it alot, but someone like me who has followed them from Sounding just was let down by Nightmare.

You might want to steer clear from track by track reviews because
they are generally looked down upon here at sputnik. They are pretty awkward to read.

Unnecessary review.

Great review, especially for a first. The writing is a a bit conversational, but you're on the right track. Do keep it up.

Also, ignore the bloke who voted no (in response to "Was this review well-written?") Some folks are apparently allergic to repeat reviews of a particular album.

I actually didn't think it was you; and, I actually used a very unspecific term ("the bloke") to denote my uncertainty lol.

Spec, I've had conversations with you before, and you're a reasonable guy lol. You must have noticed that it's this Emerson guy's first review; besides, if we all only reviewed stuff that "needs it", then Enotron would be the only one still on here lol.

Sorry if I sounded confrontational. I just get horrid recollections of how I was negged into oblivion as a first-time user - only because I did LP's A Thousand Suns lol.

Haha fair enough. Over the last few weeks my approval has been dropping ever so slightly cause someone is going through my reviews and negging them. I just gave up on the approval rating.

But Irving, your review of A Thousand Suns was the only positive review that actually had a point... Makes no sense at all.

yeah, cause this needs 12 reviews.

since mine is a track by track and it was only my second review ever, i can't really say anything to you about not doing tbt's without sounding hypocritical, but don't fucking do tbts. unless it's like the fucking opeth blackwater park tbt, then you'll get torn apart and neg'd for it.

oh and this review is so wrong, as is the rating. you're basing your hate of this album off of the Rev not doing the drumming when he wrote the drum tracks. the only reason he didn't record them is because you know, he died. kind of unfair criticism. that'd be like blaming abraham lincoln for 9/11.

My first review was a tbt too, that's why I warn him not to make tbt cause mine sucked badly, and was criticised for being tbt.
