Got Questions for WITTR?

2009-03-02 by Tyler EMERITUS | 52 Comments
In the coming week, I (Tyler Munro) will be conducting a phone interview with black metal band Wolves In The Throne Room on behalf of SputnikMusic.com in the wake of the release of their forthcoming album Black Cascade.

If you have any topics or questions you'd like to see raised with the band, submit them here or email them to tylr.munro@gmail.com and I'll do my best to see you get an answer. An example question, from Sputnik's John Hanson, is for me to ask whether or not the band "likes Mastodon". I'm not really sure I'll ask that, but it's a start.

That's not even a question, Kirk > Picard by default.

Serious Questions:

-Where's the Diadem of 12 Stars album cover photo from?
-What do you think of the rest of the USBM scene?

Non-Serious Questions:

-If you were a wolf, how grim would you be?
-Are black metal groupees hot?

Excellent question Harrison. I heard black metal shows had hot chicks, well according to Decibel but that...would be the one to ask besides farming tips.

Standard I know, but most musicians have some hilarious stories. Just a thought really.
Also ask if they listen to Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

ok ok. time for the real ones.
1. Explain the writing process for your songs. a. Do you all collaborate equally or is there a primary writer? b. Black Cascade is a little bit more traditional in sound when compared to the stretches of atmospheric/shoe-gazy passages found on Two Hunters and to a lesser extent on Diadem. Did you start writing with that in mind or did it develop in that direction over time?
2. What are your thoughts on the state of the USBM scene?
3. From where outside the metal genre do you draw influence.
4. Rigs/gear set up

Who let the wolves in the throne room?

woof, woof woof.
no, what I'd like to know is why there is such a vast difference between their live shows and the records. when I saw them they had only two very brief atmospheric parts (and no clean vocals at all), one at the beginning and one during the show. and during the second one people were shouting kinda angrily something like they should stop that nonsense and go on with the heavy shit. just what they think about stuff like that?

Mendigo

ok, while reading through the comments I realised that the new album seems to be less atmospheric all in all. so forget that one. but the reason for the lack of clean vocals on their live shows would be interesting.

unless you're thinking of some weird clean vocals im not aware of pretty much all of them are done by female vocalists, either Jamie Myers or Jessika Kenney depending on release. Those broads are in other bands, so that's why the vocals aren't executed live.

Some Queries!

1). The first track off of the new LP, "Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog," is based on the famous romantic oil painting, "Der Wanderer uber dem Nebelmeer" by Casper David Friedrich. Have you guys taken cues or inspiration from other such works of art? Is there common interest for romanticism/art among the members? If so, how/when did that interest develop? How exactly do you reflect the imagery/mood of such works of art in your music?
2.) (I might be wrong about this)... You guys recently finished touring abrouad. How does the response compare to reactions yo've encountered in the States?

That's it for me. You're pretty lucky for getting to talk to these guys. I imagine they're pretty interesting characters.

Boxers or briefs?
Seriously though, it's probably a pretty obvious question to ask but maybe ask if what they listen to on a daily basis consists of mainly metal or if they listen to a wide variety of things. Also, maybe if they like any bands/artists that most people wouldn't expect them to?
