Dickinson's Afterglow Of Ragnarok 2023-12-01 by Fernando Alves STAFF | 15 Comments | Bruce Dickinson has unveiled the first single, 'Afterglow Of Ragnarok', off his upcoming seventh solo album The Mandrake Project, which is set to be released in early 2024 by BMG. The music video, directed by Ryan Mackfall, can be seen below.
Dickinson comments: "It was important to set the tone of the project with this track. As befitting its title, it’s a heavy song and there’s a great big riff driving it…but there’s also a real melody in the chorus that displays the light and shade that the rest of the album brings."
The Mandrake Project is a dark, adult story of power, abuse and a struggle for identity, set against the backdrop of scientific and occult genius. Created by Dickinson, scripted by Tony Lee and stunningly illustrated by Staz Johnson for Z2 Comics, the series features 12 episodes that collect into three graphic novels and will be launched in 2024.
An eight-page comic prequel to The Mandrake Project, titled Afterglow Of Ragnarok, is included within the vinyl seven-inch single booklet which accompanies the single of the same name and sets the scene for the story to come. The seven-inch single also features Dickinson‘s original solo demo version of the song 'If Eternity Should Fail', which first appeared on Iron Maiden's album The Book Of Souls, in 2015.

The song has strong highlights and a nice guitar tone, which at times reminds me of Criss Oliva.
| | | Amazing song 😀
| | | Great song!
| | | I dug it. Think his aging singing voice complements the heavier tones significantly more than his work with Maiden.
| | | lol this is terrible
| | | yeah this is very bad
| | | Love it
| | | Not to sound like JK Simmons from Whiplash, but… He seems to consistently be just a little off tempo? I think he’s rushing in a lot of spots, it’s weird.
I’d like it a lot better if he was just on beat.
| | | He has got to be kidding us with some of those song titles, particularly 6, 7, and 8
| | | Fits right in with the latter half of the Bruce catalog, which is exactly what I like. Although this tends more toward the power metal tendencies on Accident where I'd prefer some more of the darker Chemical Wedding edge. But it'll be great nonetheless.
| | | I could never get into his solo material, and this seems to be no exception. I wish I could unsee the video too.
| | | I will not even bother with the video, but the song is decent after a couple of listens. The by far best Dickinson solo work (the chemical wedding) was quite inaccessible in the sense that it really needed time to click, without seeming to be inaccessible and needing time to grow. It is more subtle than it seemed upon first listen. As Roy Z is also on board here, I am hoping for the same effect with this one.
| | | Double post
| | | triple :O
| | | Somebody please acknowledge the timing issues so I don’t wonder if I’m just crazy.
