Angelo Badalamenti Passes Away

2022-12-12 by ShadowOfTheCitadel | 46 Comments
Acclaimed composer and frequent musical conduit for filmmaker David Lynch, Angelo Badalamenti, has passed away at the age of 85, according to multiple members of his family.

Born to Sicilian roots in the city of Brooklyn, New York, Badalamenti first began playing piano at the age of eight. Throughout his formative years, his commitment and natural skill with the instrument led to pursuing collegiate studies at the University of Rochester before transferring and settling on his alma mater, the Manhattan School of Music.

In 1975, Angelo, then going by the name 'Andy Badale', began his scoring career for the Ossie Davis directed action film, "Gordon's War". Though he composed for other films throughout the next decade, it would be his handling of 1986's "Blue Velvet" that would be the beginning of his most famous and notable compositional work - his creative partnership with filmmaker David Lynch.

While Badalamenti scored the majority of David Lynch's films, he is most known for his iconic soundtrack to the cult series "Twin Peaks", which he received a Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance ("Twin Peaks Theme") in 1991. Alongside these collaborations, he also helmed scores for films such as "Arlington Road", "The Beach", as well as the Quantic Dream developed neo-noir/adventure game, "Indigo Prophecy".

Inspiring musicians on a broad spectrum; From Jamie Stewart of Xiu-Xiu, the dream pop band Beach House, to acclaimed Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka - Angelo Badamalenti has left behind a legendary sound of his own, and his timeless sounds will always be celebrated.

Rest in peace.

RIP

Twin Peaks is my favorite show and "Audrey's Dance" and "Freshly Squeezed" are 2 of the coolest soundtrack pieces ever

He also co-wrote Julee Cruises' 5/5 album Floating into the Night. "Falling" "Floating" "Into the Night" ...just wow, jazzy dream pop for the history books

and even delved into comedy with National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation's soundtrack

Apparently, he did The Wicker Man too

Talent, range, memorability, emotion

Hard RIP. The Twin Peaks ost is one of the greatest soundtracks. Perfectly nails the show's mix of existential fear and small town comfort

Mulholland Drive is a fucking masterpiece and he had a large role in that. I still haven’t watched Twin Peaks but I’m sure his work there is just as good.

The sounds in Mulholland Drive are so beautiful, the music and subtle background sound effects create such a rich atmosphere, and its one of the things that sticks in my mind when I think of that movie. RIP to the legend.
