It's a good point, but it's probably because he sold them heroin. Anyone selling heroin can get up to 20+ years and fined up to $500,000 in Minnesota apparently, so if he did actually do it he's not going to get out of this either way.

obviously heroin is an illegal drug but if he didn't sell it with the intent to kill her I don't see how it's manslaughter. You wouldn't charge a doctor with murder because he prescribed sleeping pills and a patient OD'd on them. I mean maybe you would but that's silly.

Conversely, the purity of illicit heroin is suspect. Hard to know what exactly to dose when there are so many potential additives.
I guess my thought is, unless the heroin was cut with a substance like fentanyl and the guy was aware of it, you can't lay that at his door. Sure, distribution and possession. But hardly a murder.
