Enslaved reveal new album

Norwegian progressive black metallers Enslaved have revealed the artwork and track list for their new album "E", out October 13th on Nuclear Blast Records. The album is over an hour of "an unprecedented mix of prog, extreme metal and shoegaze on 8 tracks" and marks the debut of new keyboardist/clean vocalist Håkon Vinje (of Norwegian proggers Seven Impale) after the departure of longtime member Herbrand Larsen.

The album will feature guest appearances from flutist Daniel Mage, jazz saxophonist Kjetil Møster, and Einar Selvik (Wardruna). The album art is once again an original piece by Enslaved collaborator Truls Espedal, who has provided the artwork for every Enslaved LP since 2001's Monumension.

2. The River's Mouth 05:12
3. Sacred Horse 08:12
4. Axis of the Worlds 07:49

8. What Else Is There (Röyksopp cover)

Founding member and primary songwriter Ivar Bjørnson explained the meaning behind the title:
“The concept of the album lies in both it’s meaning as a letter in the latin alphabet, and it’s runic reference: the rune “Ehwaz”, that is depicted as an “M” when drawn as rune (just to make sure it gets really confusing) – the runes are drawn to look like what they literally mean. Ehwaz (pronounced and used as what’s known as “E”, but drawn as an “M”) looks like and means “Horse”. Which is closely linked to its esoteric meaning; which is “trust” and “co-operation”. One of mankinds oldest and deepest pairings/collaborations with any “outside” entities is with the horse. When they were first tamed and utilised there must have arisen the notion of some esoteric link between the two; now we could move swiftly, escape faster and even eat and drink from the animal (both horse milk and horse blood), and of course show off and brag before our enemies and peers with the most spectacular horses.
So, no, it is not about horses! It is about the symbioses that surrounds us; which are vital to our existence, to our development – on all scales: man and vessel (for instance horse, yes), a person and its significant other, child and parent, musician and instrument, chaos and order, subconscious and conscious, Oden and Sleipnir – wisdom and communication. There are many levels and variations of this concept on the album; the duality of man and nature, present and past personalities within one self, the conscious fear and the subconscious drive. And other symbiosis.”

Enslaved will play a number of European festivals, embark on a UK tour supporting Opeth, and play two special release shows in Norway supporting the new album over the next several months. They will also participate in the '70000 Tons of Metal' Caribbean cruise in February, with future US plans to be announced soon.

So excited for this. I'm a huge fan of Seven Impale as well so that's a very interesting and unexpected combination

only seen bits and pieces of older songs they've played live with him, but Håkon seems like he'll fill Herbrand's shoes quite well

Album art makes me think the album is called M, and not E lol

Looking forward to this one a lot, and I hope the new key guy has a voice as pleasant as the previous guy.

"an unprecedented mix..."

This, however, is marketing bs that needs to get the fuck outta here

Okay Enslaved fans, if I listened to AEO and found it absolutely awkward, is there any album that might otherwise turn me on to them? Because while I'd love to get into this band, AEO did more to turn me off from them than pique my interest.

@Xenorazr
try Ruun or Below the Lights for something heavier, or RIITIIR for something larger and more progressive. That's prob my favorite from them. AEO is a close second tho

In Times is also a good try if you're looking for more bm elements, it has some of their heaviest stuff in years (AEO and Riitiir are better imo though)

thought they had some near-shoegaze moments on vertebrae, my favorite record of theirs. hope that's the kind of sound they're pushing here but i'm interested regardless

Really like that album art, looking forward to this. Hope it's more melodic and interesting than their last two albums. I'd love a return to the atmospheric vertebrae sound.

Wouldn't mind something like Below the Lights, but band rules. Whatever it is will be good.

Y'all are acting like his little description for the sake of satisfying the appetite of ppl like us means anything tho lol.. like he's gotta say something. If shoegaze elements are a big part of this record, so be it. Ya look like a fool talkin shit when you haven't even heard anything yet
