Arcade Fire share new single

2017-01-20 by cavalrycaptain | 41 Comments
On the eve of Donald Trump's inauguration, Arcade Fire have released a new promotional single, "I Give You Power". Featuring guest vocals from gospel singer / civil rights activist Mavis Staples, the song is a politically-charged protest anthem sure to polarize listeners.

All proceeds from "I Give You Power" will be donated to the American Civil Liberties Union, and it is currently unknown whether the song will appear on the band's upcoming album.

I wasn't even at the 1 minute mark when I turned the song off. This is just so bad. Reflektor had b-sides that were just as great as the ones that made the album but wow I feel like the band didn't even try on this. Like they just took the instrumental of an unfinished demo from the Reflektor recordings and hastily put lyrics on it

Also there's something off with the production, it sounds murky in the worst way. I can't quite put my finger on it.

I will forever love Arcade Fire for their first three albums, and Reflektor had some truly amazing moments too but this marks the point where they start to lose me.

Snide, like I said, it sounds like the band used the instrumental of an unfinished demo. That or they rushed this song, neglecting major things production-wise, just to coincide with the whole Trump thing

I liked it. But yeah, I really don't want another Reflektor (despite my love for it). I'm just hoping this isn't an album track. I mean, they said they had "more recorded than needed," so hopefully this is just an offshoot of the album making process.

Song is a huge letdown; this better not be on the new record.

I feel like every band right now is doing an anti-trump cash grab just because they know most music/hipster types hate him. I guess this is the political rock I was clamoring for during election season...I just thought it'd be better.

i share the anti trump sentiments and af have super strong views, so its not the message that bothers me. its just the lack of substance.

Yeah and this particular song's proceeds go to a specific cause so I'd tend to agree, just a bit sick of the wave of releases lately by great bands capable of making incredible protest songs churning out half assed tracks like this and then having it proclaimed as breaking news and something revolutionary by Pitchfork, NME, and such just because of the forced relevancy of the content.

The track is quite mediocre, but I like the tunes. Hope they will experimext more with this electronic-ish stuff, but make it better.

yeah definitely hope the quality of protest music goes up because at the moment it's super lazy and boring

Drive-By Truckers gave me all the political music I need for the next four years to be honest, however I have no issue with artists making protest music as long as it's good. Which this isn't.

In general though the ratio of good to bad protest music is much lower than the ratio of good to bad music in general.

Does this remind anyone else of early LCD soundsystem? Cuz it ain't bad, it just makes me wish I was listening to LCD soundsystem instead.

if the intent was to polarize listeners then they failed miserably. i don't think i've read one positive opinion so far

I mean the guy behind LCD Soundsystem produced Reflektor. Which further reinforces my thoughts on this being a Reflektor throw away

I wish these artists would stop making political songs. They're all forced and shitty musically just to get across a message that we've already heard ad nauseam. What's the point

@fullofsounds-the formula for this song is very similar to LCd, with a an electro beat with looped vocal samples, the only difference is LCD does it so much better with better hooks
