X guitarist beats cancer again

2015-10-15 by JohnXDoesn't | 15 Comments
He's done it before and he'll do it again if necessary, but just a few months after the semi, somewhat legendary guitarist Billy Zoom of the legendary punk band X underwent treatment for bladder cancer, the 67 year old Zoom has announced he is cancer free and will be returning to intermittent live performance with the band as his overall health permits.

Billy reports he will be continuing treatment for the next 18 months as his doctors relay this form of cancer has been likely to return, so he will undergo continued chemotherapy for the next 18 months with a "one month on, two months off" schedule. Zoom says in his time between treatment he would like to play as many X gigs as possible. What that means for Zoom's current fill in, the capable but somewhat standard Texas guitarist Jesse Dayton is anyone's guess. However as ordinary a fill in as Dayton has been one good thing that has come from his duty is X returned to playing all electric shows, full steam ahead. With Zoom aboard the band had made a 90 degree turn of sorts this past year employing an additional guitarist on stage, part time keyboard player, and "semi acoustic" instrumentation which changed their sound if not their style. Zoom even took to sitting on a stool for performances given his health issues. Sure, they still rocked like hell but it just wasn't the same. However with Dayton on guitar it has been business as used to be usual.

But however X intend to continue it is good music news indeed to hear Billy Zoom is back on his feet and ready to rock with the band once more. And vanity sure has not left Zoom as the guitarist report's "chemo is very slimming. I look good." And hopefully he'll sound just as well as X fans anticipate his return.

If you would like to donate to Zoom's Kick Butt Cancer fund you can do so here. Because punk rock pays well enough to eat, but not well enough to treat cancer. Plus although Billy is an old man he has young children because he is just a stud like that. So help a guy out!

If you're not familiar with X, you need to brush up on your punk rock. Los Angeles is one of the best punk albums ever.

Rad news, I've missed out on seeing these guys TWICE now and I will fucking hate myself forever if I don't manage to see them atleast once. One of the bands that got me into punk rock as a thirteen year old, thanks Dad.

ASnideReturns i would recommend Live In Los Angeles for a first listen. X was always a great live band and this album features much of the best from the first four albums, and the tunes sound fresh

after those albums X changed as a band. and these days when performing with Zoom those are the only albums they play cuts from. after those albums they really only recorded one dreadful album called ain't love grand (zooms last with the band), a decent "comeback" album with another guitarist, and hey zues, an X album in name only. for a good overview of what X was all about during their recording days check out my reviews here at the site as i ran their catalog

but sure, start with Live In Los Angeles. after that Wild Gift, Los Angeles, Under The Big Black Sun, More Fun In The New World

An actual news article on Sputnik, I'm impressed!
And yeah I'm totally gonna jam Live In Los Angeles, 'cause it's a good time right now to see someone beating the shit out of cancer.

Good for him, I'm happy he made it. No doubt it took a lot of wilpower to make it through that shit. I personally don't like that "battling" against cancer is somehow seen as a game that you can win or loose. We don't do this with other diseases. And I fail to see how you'd score it as a loss against someone if he dies because of cancer.

But that's just me.

i'm glad for him, too. sincerely being a long time fan of the band and having the pleasure of meeting him and his wife around 12 or 13 years ago outside a gig. the theater was local and the only way out was the front and so the bands walked out that way after the gig, went to their own cars, etc. Zoom walked out with his lovely wife and i approached with my then gf and said hi, what a fan i was, all that. the guy could not have been nicer, and his wife as well. just very gracious. i honestly will never forget it. he even asked us about our lives, where we lived, how long i'd been a fan, and thanked me for my support. and yeah, they looked great!

billy over came prostate cancer 5 years ago with major surgery. i think they had to remove it. so he has been there before. i was fortunate enough to see him play one of his last four gigs with the band before his hiatus. they played Los Angeles in its entirety. it was splendid. here is a video of the last song from that album played at the gig that night. he having cancer was just announced that day, and it was said to be advanced. so it was quite a special gig for me to witness. i thought it could be the last time i'd ever see Zoom play. but luckily turns out it won't be =]
