Albums rules, expected nothing less.
| |
"Seminal post-hardcore, folk, at some point anywhere-in-between band mewithoutYou"
album is amazing, definitely their best since B,S
| |
seeing them tomorrow. hype as fuck to hear this live
| |
I may like these guys as much/more than Brand New. Can't wait to listen to this.
| |
last song is fantastic
| |
Rainbow Signs may already be in my top five for them. Album is incredible.
| |
"After their ten-year tour of 'Catch For Us the Foxes',"
what's this supposed to mean? I'm not really following.
| |
Catch For Us the Foxes came out in 2004. In 2014 they held a 10 year anniversary tour.
| |
Ah ok, might wanna clarify on that in the article. It's pretty unclear.
| |
they toured that album for 10 years? Holy shit! Has to be a world record.
| |
I don't think I've been more hyped for a new record than I am for this one. So stoked to listen to this.
| |
this sounds fucking amazing - easily their best since b/s
| |
God damn this is great, almost done with my first listen, and it's simply mindblowingly good
| |
mexican war streets is top 5 mwy
| |
So damn good. Brings back a lot of the intensity from their earlier work. Currently loving "Blue Hen" as well as the rest of the album.
| |
two seconds in, this is AOTY
| |
Anyone else think the verses in Watermelon Ascot sound like an Interpol song?
| |
The mewithoutYou guys love Interpol, especially Turn on the Bright Lights. That album helped prompt the change from [A->B] Life to Catch For Us the Foxes.
But yes, that was one of my first thoughts, too.
| |
Red Cow and Blue Hen are my current favs.
| |
blah.
| |
Lilac Queen phenomenal imo
| |
amazing
| |
Rainbow Signs too.
Overall I still miss their heavy early days but man good stuff.
| |
So the question is: is this a 4.9 or a 5? ; )
| |
It's a pretty stunning album at any rate.
| |
The question for me is: is this album better than Brother, Sister?
| |
this is so good
| |
Way better than Brother, Sister
| |
Dorothy hits pretty fucking hard, man
| |
It's the emotional core of the record I think. A pocket of beautiful sorrow.
| |
"can you take the shape of my dead father? I know for a fact he would have liked my wife" the fuckin' feels
on balance this might be their best record, and BS is a hard 5 so
| |
Yeah this is pretty much my favourite album so far this year. Beats out Hop Along which is saying a lot since I love that album.
| |
have you thought much about that cry?
eloiiii eloiiiii
| |
So great... Argh I can't wait for the physical release to be in my lap. I love lyric booklets haha.
| |
cooking up a review for this now (I ain't waitin for no dust to settle motherfuckers)
basic first thoughts are that Aaron is dealing a lot less in absolutes and a lot more in the grey areas between belief and non-belief, love and hate, truth and lies and so on and personally I'm loving this more ambiguous writing from him
| |
This release reminded me shit loads of modernist approaches to meaning. Like the ambiguity and the flurry of different images and associations all assembled in one space.
Look forward to the review!
| |
My favourite since B/S after only one listen.
| |
BEHOLD THE SNAKE OF BRAAAAAAASSSS
THE WIND WAS BLOWING BACKWARDS
| |
Guess I best hear what all the hype is about.
| |
so, it seems like the general consensus is this is far better than ten stories, which is great to hear. about to take a listen.
| |
alright this is definitely their best album since brother, sister.
| |
listening now.
| |
This is has been streaming for more than 12 hours and not a single review yet
Way to go Sputnik, I didn't think that was possible
| |
My review won't be until either Monday or Wednesday/Thursday next week
Got a lot of work stuff going
| |
i really don't think blue hen is as great as some people are saying, but most of this album is excellent so far. love the atmosphere on most of these tracks.
| |
This is probably my favorite album so far this year
| |
I listened 3 times in a row. Can't decide. I won't say what the decision is about, but I just can't decide.
| |
whether or not it's better than Ten Stories amirite?
| |
Is the stream not live anymore?
| |
I'm streaming it now.
And nah Toondude, a bigger decision than that.
| |
it's still there
@Sowing, oooo the suspense might just kill me
| |
damn, soundcloud must be blocked at work
| |
"damn, soundcloud must be blocked at work"
Where do you work? That sucks.
"oooo the suspense might just kill me"
Let it build. Review is forthcoming within the next 7 days.
| |
avg prediction for this is probably going to be 4.2 or 4.1
| |
(Looks at Sowing's officially adjusted list)
Decision to make is whether or not this is better than 'Froot'.
| |
I don't do .1 increments anymore (the power was just too much to handle) so you're already wrong
| |
I meant the rating avg, not your rating :-P
| |
oh ok well if we're talking about things that matter less ; )
no but seriously, I'm betting on the overall rating settling around a 3.9-4.0.
| |
Well I certainly hope it goes higher than Ten Stories
| |
this is amazing
| |
Ten Stories was fucking incredible though, like it's almost a tie with Brother, Sister. If I end up liking this album as much as Ten Stories then that will pretty much solidify these guys as my favorite band.
| |
Magic Lantern Days and Rainbow Signs fucking rule!
| |
ten stories isn't even remotely close to brother, sister. this is the best thing they've done since brother sister, but the two albums in-between aren't that great. so far this is a 4 for me. really excellent stuff for most of the album, but i can already tell there's a few songs that don't do much for me.
| |
Ten Stories is close to a 5 for me and but it was a huge grower because it explored tones that aren't the usual stuff I gravitate. It kept getting better as there is so much to unpack to it. This album's tone is everything I am inclined to enjoy. And I'm really excited to unpack the meanings in it. But mwY are one of my favourite bands so I give their music a lot of time regardless.
| |
I wonder how everything will fit together in regards to ideas and how that will engage with their older stuff.
| |
I think the real clincher and unsung hero with Brother/Sister was Chris Kleinberg. He was the linchpin when it came to those expansive delay tracks on both CFUTF and B/S, which complimented the desperation in Aaron's lyrics and vocal delivery. I feel that on this record, Mike Weiss really came through because he had Brandon to bounce ideas off of and he's finally honed his guitar craft. I feel like Ten Stories had some of the best (slide on Elephant in the Dock) and absolute worst guitar parts (pretty much all of Aubergine and Cardiff Giant) this band has ever had. This album recaptures mwY at their most vital and potent. I'm so happy about this record.
| |
This is fantastic. Have yet to hear Ten Stories (ik, ik, I'll get to it,) but this is right up there with B,S for sure. CFUTF is probably my favorite of theirs overall, but their discog is so consistently amazing it's hard to pick. Up there with Opeth and Converge as hardest band to rank.
| |
The more I listen to this the more I dig it. Album is gooooooooood af.
| |
Hopefully this will grow on me, I still like Ten Stories more. Mostly just looking forward to hearing it with the lyrics
| |
New Titus > this.
| |
no
| |
would this album be a good place to start listening to these guys?
| |
I'd start with B,S or Catch Us For the Foxes
| |
ill try brother sister first then
| |
even though you guys think this is better?
| |
This will likely be the easiest AOTY of all time. 2015 has mostly sucked so far.
Catch For Us the Foxes is my favorite album ever though, so I don't see this unseating it as mwY's best.
| |
band always intrigued me (artworks duh) but first time stop and listen and realize that it's pretty much the real deal
| |
I don't get y'all. Their first album is easily their best.
| |
nah, BS is their best
| |
Bs is pretty good. I was expecting them to be heavier than they were though.
| |
After going back through their discog and giving this more listens, I'm gonna make the bold claim that this is their best album.
| |
Their first album is their most aggressive, so if you're looking for a heavier outfit then their debut might be your thing.
| |
Silencer and Gentlemen are the shit.
| |
Thanks toondude
| |
Silencer is the shit [2]
| |
Brother, Sister is quite possibly my favorite album of all-time, so I highly doubt this will top it. Still a damn good record though.
| |
Honestly, Catch for us the Foxes is definitely their best. It is a huge grower.. I don't know if it clicked really even within the first 20 real listens. It may have been reading the lyrics along with it.
This album may tie with BS though, not sure.
| |
agreed, catch for us is hands down their best album. brother, sister is an entirely different kind of album. also a classic, but just a peg below cfutf
| |
If something doesn't click after the first 20 listens I usually stop wasting my time
But yeah foxes is their third best, nestled right behind Ten Stories
| |
It's not that I didn't like it before those 20 listens, I still liked it enough to keep listening. One of those listens, though, it shot from a 3.5 to a 5.
| |
we agree on a lot of stuff, sowing, but that is hands down the biggest disagreement we've ever had. ten stories is honestly really mediocre imo. some of the vocals are extremely grating, and the album is wildly inconsistent. i love the guitar tones and overall atmosphere on catch for us. the songs are catchier, harder, and have some ridiculously cool layers
| |
Foxes > B,S > A to B > Ten Stories > All Crazy
definitive
| |
Foxes > Crazy = B,S > [A->B] > Ten Stories
I'm a weirdo, I guess. Also still trying to figure out where Pale Horses fits in here.
| |
Ten Stories=Foxes>B,S>Crazy>[A->B]
| |
Foxes > AB > BS >Horses (tentatively) > Stories > Crazy
| |
Can't truly rate a mwY album before reading and knowing the lyrics.
B,S>Foxes>Ten Stories>AB>It's All Crazy
| |
Wish that this band and I clicked more. I see the appeal, and it's definitely really cool. Really not sure why I don't love this.
| |
I WAS THE ISIS FLAG DESIGN
| |
I don't hear anything special about this tbh. It's good....
| |
I think for me it has a lot to do with the context of everything that has come before.
| |
ugh i need the lyrics to this like NOW
| |
ugh i need the lyrics to this like NOW [2]
| |
Also the album is sounding incredible.
| |
i'm honestly shocked this doesn't already have like 5 reviews
| |
same here, maybe they're all lying in wait for Sowings review or something
| |
Probably because without the lyrics it'd be so hard to review appropriately.
| |
Being a mewithoutYou album
| |
Exactly, I wanna review it after a few more listens but I'm not gonna do it without getting my hands on the lyrics first
| |
I just wish I lived in America so i could get my hands on that rainbow vinyl deluxe edition without dishing out my organs.
| |
I'm gonna get that deluxe edition, but to go with the rainbow vinyl, or audiophile black? ugh, choices.
| |
They're also releasing like 8 b-sides along with it, which I'm really curious to hear, but again, only place I can find them releasing them is in that American deluxe edition.
I'd go with the rainbow though, rarely see a vinyl that crazy.
| |
The rainbow just clashes so hard with the album art lol. Do they not ship out of America?
| |
That is very true aha.
They do, but it comes to like £55 or $84 for me to, and I already pre-ordered the european vinyl because I was a poor student at the time.
| |
Oh, gotcha. Yeah, that's quite a big hit to the wallet. I've never ordered a vinyl before, so I have a question: It says that it doesn't ship til late summer, but that I get a digital download along with the vinyl, so do I not get the digital download until the vinyl arrives, or do I get that right away?
| |
Anyone know?
| |
Oh no, you should get the digital download right away on the release date. Yesterday they posted on Facebook saying that anyone who pre-orders from now gets an instant digital download of the album, which I thought was kind of weird since they're not letting people who already pre-ordered it to get the download now.
| |
@Muppelope: If you email their band manager, Michael Almquist, and give him your pre-order number he will get back to you with the digital download code. Everyone who pre-ordered the album, whether before mwY's latest post about getting a digital download with a pre-order or after, should get a code. That's what they meant when they said it "shipped" in the email they just sent out.
| |
Cool, just ordered the rainbow and downloaded.
| |
Jealous.
| |
Sorry, but not really. Just found out they're in MN today and IA tomorrow. I work tonight and my grad party is tomorrow though so boo.
| |
Saw them play last night and they had vinyl copies but i passed them up. just realized that if i bought it i probably would have gotten the lyrics.
btw this album sounds incredible live. they played 3-4 songs off of it and ended with Rainbow Sign and it was fucking amazing
| |
I can only imagine how epic Rainbow Signs would sound live.
| |
oh hey heres the setlist for the curious

| |
brother sister >> foxes >> ten stories >> a to b> havent heard new one yet
a to b is so messy
| |
but it's the most energetic and that's what counts. feels more raw.
| |
Gentlemen, Silencer, Bullet to Binary, and Nice and Blue are sooo good. I memorized and recited the lyrics to Silencer for an assignment for speech last year.
| |
Silencer is easily one of their best songs.
Lyrics anywhere??
| |
found 'em:
LYRICS - http://genius.com/albums/Mewithoutyou/Pale-horses
| |
thats true
| |
Not sure how trustworthy those are. The lyrics for Dorothy are totally wrong at the end.
| |
My review will be up Monday or Tuesday probs and then Sowing's will completely eclipse it and I'll be sad
IT WARMS MY HEART TO WATCH YOUR WORLD FALL APART

I prey on the defenseless
But Jac when you're staff you can do the same...it's the circle of life

It's on spotify streaming now
| |
well duh the album is actually out now
| |
no man, they have the lyrics on spotify. none of their other albums have the lyrics on spotify.
| |
oh okay
| |
