2 New Smashing Pumpkins Albums

2014-03-26 by YoYoMancuso STAFF | 67 Comments
Billy Corgan has announced on his twitter as well as his band's website that the Smashing Pumpkins will be releasing two albums next year entitled "Monuments To An Elegy" and "Day For Night". The post describes the album's sounds as being very guitar-oriented, and Corgan has also announced that Howard Willing, who worked on the band's fourth album Adore, will produce the records. Another interesting feature is Billy's statement that he will share details about the recording sessions each day.

i bet these albums will suck like their most current efforts.damn i miss the 90's era pumpkins.i wish billy would do his future works under another name and quit tarnishing the name of the pumpkins.

@joesmoe4000 you do realize that the Smashing Pumpkins has pretty much always been Billy Corgan's band? No matter who they are, the other members were/are basically hired guns.

that may be true but he created better music in their presence i'm sure they influenced his
creativity also proof is in the 90's era albums.not much you can debate about this new sound

Lol, so you're saying that bands that keep their lineups intact consistently make music of the same quality?

Also, Oceania was pretty good. You should go check it out.

Lol. Priceless, Rowan. Priceless.

Oceania was a stellar album. So much creative guitar leads flowing through it, not to mention some sweet riffs reminiscent of Siamese Dream days. Also can't go wrong with having an album that is strong front to back musically, and is over an hour long. Makes quite the musical adventure. I'll definitely check these two albums out. Hopefully Corgan doesn't outdo himself tho.

When bands say their music is very "guitar oriented" I have no idea what they mean. More riffs? Solos? Guitar driven melody? Duel Guitars? Songs were written for guitar? Written on guitar?

Or does he mean no more synth?

I hope so. The synth ruined the worst tracks on Oceania, which was a solid 4 so I have great expectations for both of these.

The album's should be good despite the title's sucking. Maybe they'll grow on me when we see some album art or a track list or, you know, hear the actual music. I'm excited. I thought Oceania was excellent- by far their most complete album since Adore and there are moments on it that can hang with Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie in terms of sheer quality.

I think by guitar-oriented he probably just means less synth. Sure, Oceania had some great guitar moments throughout... some good solos, strong riffs, leads, all that stuff. It was the best guitars have sounded on a Pumpkins album since Mellon Collie. But that being said, I wouldn't describe it as a "guitar album" to anyone. The synth makes its presence known just as well. Siamese Dream though? That's a guitar album for sure I'd say. It's all about those tones and fuzz and solos. And then Pisces Iscariot with that onslaught of sheer guitar bliss in Starla. Zeitgeist was pretty guitar-centric too, but I doubt he puts out an album that bad again.

tl;dr: I love the pumpkins

A 90's rock icon turned chubby, bald, pretentious control freak. Oceania by Corgan & Friends was one big, fat yawn and we all know the only 90's "comeback" band worth listening to is Alice in Chains.

Gish? Amazing
Siamese Dream? Amazing
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness? Amazing
Adore? Near-Amazing, still really great.

Machina I? Shit.
Machina II? Shit.
Zeitgeist? Shit.
Oceania? Meh, not shit, but not good.

I have 0 faith that this album will be any good. Pumpkins should have ended after Adore...
