I also enjoy this band. Very consistent. The sound hasn't changed much between this and Rescue... but when it's this solid and catchy, it doesn't really have to.

Anyways it sounds like a Silverstein song circa 2004 (or whenerver the hell that waterfront album came out) but it's 2013 so that isn't a good thing.

Although I disagree considering the vocals have improved immensely as have other aspects of their
music, them releasing an album in the vein of discovering the waterfront is a good thing.

They are pretty good at making post hardcore songs of the catchy like and nature. I think this is when they are at their best. They have some decently heavy songs that work really well too, but I don't like it as much when they do just the pop-rock like songs. They never grab my attention as much as the others.

The song does indeed rule though. I think I like it even more than when I first listened to it.

It's not bad, just more of the same. One of the reasons I tend to wait and buy their stuff when it's on sale. I was planning on buying this when it came out based on the two released songs, but I am not so sure now...

Maybe a few more listens before Tuesday will help.

I do see a bit of the Thrice comparison on track 2.

toxin.
February 3rd 2013

You're right though, I think some of these later songs are just a bit more stale than the earlier tracks. And the ballads or whatever don't do anything for me, though they generally take longer to sink in anyways.

toxin.
February 3rd 2013

I love California and Massachusetts.

Maybe the band should just release a concept album based on the 50 states

Ecnalzen
February 3rd 2013

lol, there's an idea

I wonder if there is something bigger going on with the lyrics. Someone pointed this out on the other "New Silverstein Song" thread with the song titles:

1 & 8: Stand Amid the Roar In a Place of Solace
2 & 9: On Brave Mountains We Conquer In Silent Seas We Drown
3 & 10: Massachusetts California
4 & 11: This Is How The Wind Shifts
5 & 12: A Better Place to Live and to Lose
6 & 13: Hide Your Secrets With Second Chances
7 & 14: Arrivals & Departures

What do you think? It seems interesting and intentional. I also noticed the Arrivals & Departures tracks (one of their older albums), as well as 4 and 11 which is this album title put together. Still, an interesting lyrical concept won't really save the same old, same old musical formula they appear to be abusing here.

toxin.
February 3rd 2013

I'm about 100% sure that has to have been intentional.
It's a pretty cool lyrical concept. And honestly I don't mind the safeness of the music (though again it's all new to me anyways)
This is probably a 4 for me, higher than Waterfront.

Ecnalzen
February 3rd 2013

That's cool. Like I said, I think it's very similar to the last two (Rescue and Shipwrecks). I think Waterfront is a lot darker and has an overall heavier sound than their other stuff (which is probably the reason you like this more). They kind of started a somewhat new formula with Shipwreck, splitting up post hardcore with some more pop/rock stuff that still has a post hardcore tinge on it. They just repeated it with Rescue and now it feels like they did it again here.

toxin.
February 3rd 2013

The poppy direction would definitely explain why I prefer this to Waterfront.

Ecnalzen
February 3rd 2013

Actually, you might check out Arrivals and Departures since you are less on the screaming stuff. I would say it is their poppiest record to date. Songwriting seemed a lil lazy on it to me, but it still has some good songs. You can tell they were trying to get a more accessible sound and maybe widen their fanbase. It didn't work out very well and a lot of people didn't like it. Shipwreck went back to a heavier sound, but still kept some of that more pop/rock aspect they were trying for in A&D. All my opinions though...

I really like this song from it if you want to check it out:
