How many songs can you write about relationships before you are beating a dead horse? Some good tracks and musically very good, just needs some variety in the lyrics. But that's always kinda been their downfall...

I like the album quite a bit but it really drags with Empty Party Rooms and to a lesser extent Zeros. Definitely a little more restrained than I wanted, but the standouts really make it great.

I can forgive the lyrics if the music is this great.

If it's not better than Omni, then I'm not bothering with it.

This band needs to hang it up. Every song just drags along for me, they're missing the pep and energy that made this band great with Planet of Ice, Highly Refined Pirates and Menos el Oso. Also, did they kick out their drummer and replace him with a machine? Most uninspired, bland drumming I've heard from this band yet.

it just sounds more slick and arena-ready than their first 3-4 albums, but it doesn't really bother me much. I think it kind of suits them, and the songwriting is much better this time around than on Omni

Idk how I feel about the songwriting. It sounds kinda cheap, adding more guitars, relying on old ideas and whatnot.

jake's lyrics have never been very good.. but they're not bad. and greencorn half the songs here aren't about relationships.

I have a lot of this band's music but still don't know how to classify their music...

I just tag them as progressive or alternative since I can't figure out the appropriate tag either.

Yo Johnny I have only listened to the album like 2-3 times but I definitely got the feel that the majority of the lyrics are about relationships, sex, girls, love, etc. How about Omni? My Time-sex, summer angel-relationship, secret county-just a bad ass song overall, hold me down-love, excuses-pop love song, the thief-relationships, into the mirror-sex, animal backwards-relationships/girls, dayglow vista road-relationships, fooled by the night-love/sex. Hey, I like the band they used to be my favorite band, still really like them, but there are other things Jake could write about.

Sex. Alcohol. The beach. Chaise lounges. The pool. Drugs.

That's the extent.

yeah, even if the lyrical subjects werent annoying they would still be monotonous. i guess jake doesnt have anything interesting to say. i just try to ignore the lyrics and enjoy the music.

Zeroes and Cold Company seem to be about post-industrialism and the monotony of modern life and Heaven is a Ghostown is obv about religion. i haven't listened enough to recall much else... but ya, i'm glad it's not all about relationships like most of Omni.

i listened to it i think 5 times now and still don't have anything of it stuck in my head. it's completely uninteresting to me

Album is still kinda boring right now. Hopefully it will start to grow on me soon. Can't wait to see these guys again in September w/ Cursive, show should rule.

If you were expecting this to top Planet of Ice, you are really setting yourself up for disappointment already. Hell, expecting anybody to make an album like Planet of Ice is downright crazy anyway.

I agree. Pretty much all of their songs, to some extent, are about sex or alcohol or both. I would probably stop listening to them if they started trying to write some sort of lyrical saga. That is not Minus the Bear.

I'm digging this, though. There are a lot of subtle flourishes I didn't notice earlier when I listened to it without headphones.

LOL really, nothing memorable on this? Well I love the "fool in your pocket" part from Toska, the last chorus in "Diamond Lightning", the guitar duel bridge in "Zeros", that holy-fuck-what-is-he-doing riff on "Cold Company"... there's PLENTY of moments. Problem is they're just moments, and not entire songs/albums like HRP/Menos/POI. And why does no one mention Beer Commercials EP? It's better than anything they did if you're talking quality.

The worst thing about this album, just like all the other ones, is Jake's vocal performance. Other than that, the songs are really enjoyable.

I think it's the opposite actually. His voice nicely blends with the music and makes it so relaxing. I'd hate it if he would put the focus more on his voice.

Well, I'm definitely not saying that he needs to put more emphasis on his voice. I don't really enjoy what he does with it when he does sing, but luckily on this album he lets the music breathe fairly frequently.

I think that part of it is his lyrics; it gets a little tiring hearing so many lovesongs from him, but at the same time it's wrong for me to expect anything else at this point.

i get what you mean omaha, and sometimes i think they could use a bit more emphasis and emotion on some parts, but mostly i think they fit well with the loungey feeling their music has. and yeah, the lyrics suck. i just ignore them.

The lyrics for this album are godawful. Before he got away with it because he wrote extremely catchy songs that weren't supposed to be deep. Now he rights junk like Heaven is a ghost town and can't pull it off. I mean even Omni was better lyrically than this.

I've had a few listens. It's a pretty bland album, nothing that really sticks out, the good parts of the album aren't strong enough to carry the rest, nor interesting enough to listen to over other their older material.
