CunninLynguists Fight Spotify
2012-06-20 by larrytheslug | 47 Replies | 3130 Views

Hip-hop trio CunninLynguists are offering their discography 'name your price' on their website over the next week. This includes records such as Kno's 2010 release 'Death Is Silent'.

According to a post on CunninLynguists fanpage, Kno explains the motive:

"It was recently revealed that the CEO of Spotify is worth $307 million dollars -- more money than every artist they feature except 1. In honor of the .005 cents per play we get from Spotify as they trick you out of your weed money under the guise of "supporting artists", it's "Fuck Spotify" week at CunninLynguists.com! Take this week off from streaming CL on Spotify and download any album from http://www.cunninlynguists.com/ at whatever price you choose -- even free! - Kno"

Can't believe Spotify's getting away with $0.005 per stream. That's ridiculous.

They aren't fighting Spotify... their music is still part of the site. This was just a witty statement and some unexpected charity.

How much does a radio station pay when they play a single? Now divide that by a couple of millions of listeners...

Giving the album away for free to fight spotify, doesn't sound like a good play. Also, spotify should have remained a free streaming music service, that's all I use for anyway.

i mean, the ceo makes a lot of or is worth a lot of money, yes. but that's fine with me; spotify is an incredible service. if bands/ labels aren't making enough from it, then pull out. it's that simple.

Wouldn't this be up to the label though? I assume the labels are making a bundle from licensing fees, while the artists collect this paltry $.005 per stream. I love the service - just hope they start paying the artists more.

I remember when Anthony Fantano brought something up about trying to use streaming services as a medium to make more money since the age of album sales are kind of dying, and he really is right. Spotify should give a larger amount per play, like at least half a cent because as is, if someone makes a huge hit and it gets a million plays on Spotify, the artist will only get $5,000 dollars. Which is obviously more than they'd get from a Youtube hit or any other streaming site but it's something that should be a focus in the music industry.

yeah streaming is the way of the future

artists should definitely earn more, but that's not up to us fortunately. it's up to the artists and/or their labels.
