Top 100 Heavy Metal Vocalists

2006-12-01 by Jom STAFF | 92 Comments
Hit Parader magazine has compiled a list of its Top 100 vocalists in heavy metal. According to the editors of the mag:

Assembling our list certainly presented a daunting task considering the breadth and scope of the metal empire during its 35-year reign as rock's most powerful and enduring force. We tried our best not to turn this into some sort of popularity contest where only the most famous (or infamous) frontmen in metal lore were recognized. Sure, the likes of Plant, Halford and Tyler are here, but so are such oft-overlooked notables Mogg, Owens and Sandoval.

The list?

Looks like Hit Parader have just taken few mainstream metal/hard rock vocalists and filled the rest of the list up with mainstream rock.

David Bowie?! Jimi Hendrix?! WTF

In some ways it wasn't as terrible as I thought. In others it made me sick. I mean come on, David Lee Roth in the top 20? And what the hell are Zack de la Rocha and Fred Durst doing on there? Zack just rips off Chuck D of Public Enemy, and Durst sounds like a constipated rat.

Most of these singers aren't even in metal bands, so it's a bit of a misnomer. They're only mentioning more obscure vocalists like Phil Mogg of UFO as lip service to make themselves sound more credible.

Since when is Led Zeppelin heavy metal? I even read a quote by Robert Plant regarding heavy metal with him saying "Led Zeppelin was never about that [heavy metal]"

whoever made this list must be old.... good to see Bruce Dickinson in the top 10 though

Obviously it wasnt supposed to be a heavy metal list - and was labelled as such instead of top Rock Vocalists - Was pretty impressed with the list til the end of it, but guess they ran out of ideas - my only main gripe is Lemmy only 48th... wtf???

Oh and Thor Rod Stewart was very good in the old days with the Small Faces - proper hard rock not what you think of him nowThis Message Edited On 12.01.06

Hit Parader is the worst music magazine ever devised. It's poorly edited, the articles are a joke, and they recycle headlines for bands. For example:

They used the headline "Taking Their Time" for 6 months for System of a Down...and never once mentioned BYOB, even thought it was getting heavy airplay.

Im so glad I stopped buying this magazine years ago. Worst list ever. Where the fuck is Mikael Akterfeld from Opeth? And Maynard James Keenan should be top 3 at least! Chester Bennington and Aaron Lewis should not even be on that list. Fred Durst has more of a metal voice than they do hahahahaha. Respect for Halford being near the top of the list!

And to Rage_Against_The_System: Tool are metal in their own way, just not totally metal and not totally prog!

Steven Tyler and Bon Scott above Freddie Mercury? Is this some kind of joke?

Also, Ian Gillan, the banshee himself, all the way down at 43? Here's how you make this list good:

1) Take Freddie, put him at the top
2) Take Bon Scott, Ozzy Osbourne, and Steven Tyler off the list completely. Give their spots to Ian Gillan and Jeff Buckley, and move Geoff Tate way the fuck up.
3) Move Rob Halford below Chris Cornell.

The person who posted this list has completely misinformed you with the title which he has used. Hit Paraders' list is about the 100 Top/Best Vocalists of all time of all genres and NOT of the heavy metal genre. Therefore all comments stating that half of the names on this list are not metal are null even though the people who posted this are not at fault as this is what the guy who posted the list made them believe. I have the above named issue of the mag infront of me right now and what I am saying is a fact...Now whether you agree with the selections is another thing but I felt like clarifying this point because it matters...

I agree.... list is not that good but it's more acceptable now that you know it concerns all genres and not just metal...in regards to the selections some are probably included because of their influence to their separate genres as well....the fact that other good singers are missing is undisputed but the fact that you cannot have an absolute list with everyone agreeing upon is also undisputed....I bet that each one of us commenting on this list can think of at least 10 other vocalists who should had been included...
