Gang Starr MC Guru Dies 2010-04-20 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 38 Comments | Guru, one-half of legendary hip hop duo Gang Starr, has died following a long battle with cancer. He was 43.
The Boston rapper, born Keith Elam, lapsed into a coma in February after enduring a cardiac episode. Although he underwent emergency surgery and regained consciousness within a week, it was understood that there was a deeper underlying condition, which turned out to be cancer.
Guru's producer Solar announced the news in a statement earlier today. "The world has lost one of the best MCs and Hip-Hop icons of all-time -- my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru," he said. "Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius."
Guru formed Gang Starr with DJ Premier. They were one of the most successful hip hop groups of the genre's golden era, releasing six albums between 1989 and 2003, including 1992's classic Daily Operatiom. However, their partnership ended on a strained note, with Guru insisting he would never work with his former partner again, and he was true to his word.
Guru also released seven solo albums under various aliases.
