Vagrant Reacts To Thrice Leak

2009-07-21 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 60 Comments
Vagrant Records, home of alt. rockers Thrice, has released a statement reacting to today's leak of the California band's new album Beggars.

An mp3 copy of the album appears to have been ripped from the label's watermarked and password-protected promo delivery site. It is believed that the leaker managed to bypass the security system and was not an authorised media person.

Beggars is currently scheduled for an October 13 release, however that date is subject to change given recent developments.

Vagrant wrote: "Vagrant Records here. We don’t normally chime in on message boards like this, but we see a lot of back and forth about the Thrice piracy issue and feel we should let people know our position: We see a lot of posts basically blaming us for this leak. Vagrant has been using that same player for almost three years and this has never been an issue.

"In this case, someone clearly and unfortunately went out of their way to try and hack into our system. The link got into the wrong hands and someone took the time to figure out how to get around the password and user log in. Obviously there are people out there we thought we could trust with that information, but instead have proven to be dishonest.

"Vagrant is currently speaking to Thrice’s management and the band about the best methods for the album release and how we’re going to proceed. When there is more to tell on that front, Vagrant will get the word out through all available media outlets.

"The band is honored to have such true, loyal supporters, and your responsibility in this matter is greatly appreciated. All we can do at this point is appeal to the fans good graces and ask they avoid permeating an already tough situation.

"We sincerely thank you for your support!"

Although its upsetting that it leaked so damn early. I doubt this is going to hurt their album sales...if anything it could boost it.

It kind of sucks that this happened so early because by all accounts the band are the most genuine people you could ever wish to come across. I still think the security's an issue; there shouldn't be a way for a teenager in their room (which is odds-on favourite) to break past your website's defenses and lift the upcoming album of one of the world's best artists. I guess now it's damage control for the label, hopefully they can organise some deal whereby the record becomes available digitally fairly soon, or at least for pre-order.

Fortunately, Thrice's fanbase comprises a lot more dedicated fans than most bands' do; the chances are the album will sell well anyway, especially since the leaked version is a) voiceover'd, b) 192kbps and c) doesn't include the normal superb packaging Thrice are associated with. And for the record, it's good. I'm not going to pretend I haven't heard it, but that doesn't mean I condone the leaking of the material in the first place. And ofc I'll buy it in October, and do a fair bit of hyping in the coming months.

If anything, the leak just confirmed that the album is more than worth buying.

Once maximum every song, a low-pitched voice says "You are listening to a Vagrant Records Advance Promotional Stream", lasts about 2 seconds. Slightly interrupts the listen but it's not the world's end; it's hardly what you want on your copy of a song you enjoy, though, yknow.

Early leak, man. The album sounds pretty sweet so far though, and let's be honest - this leak probably won't affect the sales whatsoever. Most people don't buy music, this we all know, so what's the big deal? Who would have bought this album but now won't because they can download it? Oh well, I personally am gonna buy it even though I'm listening to it already because I love Thrice.

Vagrant's system is okay and already beefy enough, it has restricted IP access and everything. That being said, it probably isn't rocket science to rip the songs off of it. This was just inevitable given the scope of the release, it's not a big deal. The voice-overs IMO impede the listening enough to make people want to get the real thing.

the voice overs are usually over parts that don't focus on dustin's singing. so it barley covers teh best part of the album

yeah but cocaine's easily right; there's no way in hell that any thrice fan is going to be satisfied with versions of the songs that have some random label message over them when the album is available to purchase.

I wouldn't say it was "inevitable". Obviously almost all records leak, but they only announced the details of the album last week- and it's almost three months until release.

Maybe not inevitable, but given that these streams are sent out so early and for the most seem to be flash based it's not surprising to see what ultimately boils down to a web-rip coming out. Then again, this seems to be more sophisticated as it seems like they're the actual base tracks that make up the stream players as opposed to individual sound-captures of the stream itself. But my point is this tends to happen when you send stuff out so early. The only album I've ever dealt with that hasn't leaked was Fortress: I got it about a month and a half prior to release and it didn't find its way online until it was released in Japan. Leaks happen and the sooner you send them out the sooner they come to be. Perhaps a sad truth but a truth nonetheless.

I refuse to listen to the leak because I'm really really excited about this album. I'm gonna buy it for the whole experience, maybe on vinyl. I like that Vagrant is being so polite about this, most companies hate pirates to the point that it's innapropriate.

I have to say I have downloaded this, and it is incredible. However I will delete it later, so it will be like a stream of sorts, and then I will buy the album in October. Of all the bands that this happens to, Thrice deserves it the least. They have always treated their fans incredibly well.

Ive been looking all around for this leak and can't find it. Where did everyone else rip it from? And i think Thrice's fan base is so strong this leak won't have that large of an effect. Everyone here including myself will still purchase the original copy.

It might even build hype for it do to the fact they may release the album earlier, imagine how many articles will take place.

But seriously where is the album leaked at!@!
