Beck plans cover albums 2009-06-18 by AtavanHalen | 13 Comments | Prolific indie-rock eccentric Beck Hansen has made some intriguing plans for his upcoming time in the studio - he will attempt to cover and record entire albums in one day's time, with a little help from some of his friends.
The idea will be one of the new features of Beck's new official website, which is currently in the overhaul process, entitled the Record Club.
The rules of contributions to the Record Club are simple - Hansen, and whomever else he chooses to work with, must record everything in one day, and no-one must rehearse or arrange anything beforehand.
The day after recording completes, Beck will release a song from the album once a week until it is completed.
According to Pitchfork Media, who broke the story, the first album that Beck shall attempt to cover will be the seminal Velvet Underground album, 1967's The Velvet Underground & Nico. Pitchfork also report that Hansen shall work with several well-known artists including freak-folk artist Devendra Banhart, Brooklyn art-pop duo MGMT, British neo-soul singer Jamie Lidell and producer Nigel Godrich.
This will be the first new studio material from Beck since Modern Guilt, his album of last year produced by Brian "Danger Mouse" Burton.
