DEP sign to Season of Mist

2009-05-27 by Athom EMERITUS | 31 Comments
The Dillinger Escape Plan have left their home of 10 years, Relapse Records, and have signed with Season Of Mist (Cynic, Anata, Drudkh), who gave the band their own imprint Phonogetic Records. Guitarist Ben Weinman had this to say:

"It is becoming clear that as the music industry standard continues to morph and change on a daily basis, artistic and operational freedom has become a band's most valuable asset. 100% free of all previous contractual ties, [we are] in an amazing position to collaborate with some interesting partners which will continue to nurture the ethic that we have been doing our best to stay true to for over 10 years now.

While touring Europe in support of our record Ire Works, I had the pleasure of meeting Michael Berberian, distributor and owner of the independent record label Season of Mist. It quickly became clear that we had very similar ideas about [our] music and its place in the underground. Season of Mist has always been a leader in releasing some of the most extreme and interesting metal and experimental music. We look forward to releasing our next full length effort in association with Season of Mist as the very first chapter of this new journey. Also, Michael's last name almost spells out Barbarian which Greg was really excited about. "

Ire Works was meh, but seasons of mist is one of my favorite labels.

This will be great.
To clear some things up, Ben writes all the music. All of it. Including the drum parts. So Chris really didn't have much say in the writing process. Yes, Chris is fucking amazing. One of my favorite drummers. But Dillinger's sound will not suffer without him.

Chris left while they were recording Ire Works, he helped writing most of the songs. I'm interested how Gil will do on the new record, he's awesome, but in a different way than Chris.

that flag now represents southern pride, so if you are trying to make a "lulz a black man holding a slavery flag" then you are fucking stupid

Ben Weinman writing the rhythm sections...

I highly doubt it, at least not the drums.

I do have some confidence in this label. It may be do them some good to get away from Evetts and Relapse.

Hopefully this new drummer kid will put some grind back into their music, and hopefully the pop/grunge that Puciato seems to love so much will leave.

Regardless of what the new album is exactly, I will try my hardest to accept it.

Pennie co-wrote all of DEP's stuff with Ben, actually.

The new drummer was insane live. Nailed everything. He looked about 16.

i've loved everything these guys have done, from the ridiculously technical and heavy shit to the poppy stuff, and i thought the last record had a pretty good balance of those two sides. can't wait for the next one!

I've heard Greg say "Chris really wasn't as big of a part of the songwriting process as you would think." It was in a video interview he had, I'll try to find it. So he contributed, but not as much as one would think. I personally find Ire Works to be a very good effort, though not as good as Miss Machine. I don't attribute that to the drumming though.
And Gil didn't leave DEP, he's just doing a bunch of stuff with Stolen Babies. He'll still be on the record, this other guy is just touring for them. At least, that's what I've heard.
Didn't mean to incite anything.

Whatever happens I'm sure the new album will be interesting to say the least.
