More like gothic rock these days. So far, they seemed to drop out the metal minus the solo in the last song. But i've really started to like Christina's voice afetr the Apocalyptica track S.O.S. Song is good, I hope it gets heavier at some point on the album.

Artwork for the new album looks kinda cool, the diamond/glass/whatever grenade.

Song is eh.

Band/ vocals are the definition of generic goth rock.

Damn it, I've had this for a month and thought I had time to review it still. I guess I need to get on it.

There are heavier songs, but don't expect "metal".
Band/vocals are the definition of generic goth rock.
Having heard the album I'd have to argue that there isn't any "gothic" left in their rock. They are now a mainstream metal/rock band, but they pull it off better than their nu-metal phase.

I don't get Lacuna Coil's appeal besides Christina's hotness. They play straight up, extremely boring nu metal.

If you've heard anything other than "Karmacode" you'd know that they've never played nu metal (except for that album).

Regardless, their music has always been made up of bland, uninspired riffs.

I'll give you that, but a thorough look into the gothic rock genre would show you that the riffs aren't so much the "star" of the show as much as the atmosphere and the vocals (even more so in female fronted bands).

Nightwish has always brought something different to the table, though.

Although in that band it is all about the male vocals for me.

Nightwish may be slightly different from a lot of other bands (at least they were before copy-cats came around), but they've been plagiarizing themselves for years. They have been using the same basic riffs and guitar tones for as far back as I have heard them (which would be Century Child).

This is one of thousands of bands to cover Depeche Mode, right?

Yes, but they did the song pretty well. There are better cover songs on the tribute to Depeche Mode, though. Especially the Veruca Salt song.

The main focus of Nightwish is the keyboards and the vocals. I mean, power metal Nightwish had some killer riffs but after Wishmaster, they focused more on the symphony elements. They pulled it off extremely well, and the guitar tone on Once was pretty fucking heavy at times. Nightwish rules, hence their 12 year reign in chick fronted metal.

Which brings me back to my original point... gothic rock bands aren't known for their great riffs.

Sorry balls. I forgot that I need to leave that statement at the end of any Nightwish-related statements ;)

That's mainly because Nightwish = power metal and (older) Lacuna Coil = gothic rock/metal.

Well firstly, Nightwish never played gothic metal, more like folky power metal to symphonic metal, and secondly man, your just one voice who doesn't like Tarja or whatnot. Their overall popularity in Europe/ and later America and the record sales back me up. One of the greatest voices in modern metal Tarja was and still is, along with Floor Jenson and Vibeke Stene.

Regardless of the genre, their riffs are generic (even if they are just stealing from themselves). You're right, I don't really enjoy Tarja's voice, I think their new vocalist is much better and the instrumental version of their new album is even more enjoyable. By throwing these 'facts' at me you're acting like I'm putting down the band when really we're saying the same thing...

Note: Nightwish rules, hence their 12 year reign in chick fronted metal.

Emppu shredded a bit in the early days and then went........... But generally speaking, sick pit riffing isn't really going to be found in these styles which is why I keep my expectations low. Generic aint bad if it works, and Nightwish somehow pulled it off. Getting away with the guitar playing third fiddle is a bit rare. But hey!!!!!!

Whole album is available for streaming now. I'll give a listen even though I hated Spellbound.
