Sputnikmusic News: Wk 09.16.08 2008-09-14 by Jom | 30 Comments | Shalom, friends. Jom here with the weekly update thingmajig.

New Staff Writers and the Contributor Overhaul: Update #1
A few of the applicants have e-mailed me recently asking for feedback and updates on promotions and whatnot.
Dave and I decided to give the applicants a full month to complete their third phase of the application process. They will have until the last week of September to submit everything to the site. From there, the staff writers will nominate their choice(s), and the Heads of Staff and Sputnikmusic moderators will nominate their choice(s). The application processing will probably take about a week, so mid-October should see the new blood trickle in. All told, it stands to reason that there will be around two more additions to the staff, and from there, we will start promoting writers to contributing status.
As reported last week:
It has been discussed, to some degree (although not set in stone), that we are going to strive for approximately a 3:1 contributor:staff ratio (id est, for every staff writer, there will be about three contributing reviewers). Whether or not this proposal sees the light of day remains to be seen, but it is one proposal that has been offered.
What this basically means is that contributing status will have a much higher designation than what it previously was, as spots will be at a premium. Also: contributing reviewers may be cyclical based on activity or inactivity. Lastly, the current staff will have some say in who gets promoted to staff positions as well as contributing positions.
As a quick update, it has been proposed that contributing reviewers have unwritten "contracts," so to speak, in the form of half-year contracts. Whether this sees the light of day as well is up in the air, but just something to pass along just in case anybody's still reading this and cares.

News and reminders
Rock Band 2 was released approximately forty-three minutes ago, while Guitar Hero: World Tour has tried to one-up the competition by announcing its setlist (see http://www.sputnikmusic.com/news.php?newsid=7369 for information). Check out this drum video for All That Remains' "This Calling" (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJxAE1K7Fjc) and see if you can explain how you can drum that without the use of the Omega Doublebass Pedal (link to product: http://omegapedal.com/twinrocker/index.html).
A gentle reminder to please submit complete albums to the database. This means having a tracklist, release date, album art, and proper capitalization where needed. This means we will not accept stuff like DeAtH mAgNeTiC or ULTRA BEATDOWN for album names. This makes us inconvenienced and makes us think you're an idiot.
Also, there is a size limit when it comes to adding album art. I personally don't know what the limit is exactly, but while I recognize and appreciate the fact that a lot of you like adding hi-res images, a 1MB image will not go through. Just make sure it's a JPEG and somewhere in the less-than-50kb range and you should be set 'cause that's all you need.
That should wrap things up for this week. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask Dave or myself or any of our friendly Sputnikmusic moderators (the sexy, studly Damrod, that shifty fucker named morrissey, or the enigmatic, comma-happy Zebra).
Peace and all that other good stuff.

Review the new see you next tuesday cd.
| | | Thanks for the news Jomsy. *thumbs up*
| | | I am still dying for a review of Two Gallants self-titled album
| | | Teddy, I've yet to hear it but believe me I'll do it when I do. Someguest, it really depends on if you want to hear them in a more radio friendly light or in a heavier route.
| | | Also, to explain a bit more about the contract idea, it's a way to ensure that people don't slack off. By having half-year or year-long contracts contributing reviewers who fall off the wagon (don't fulfill the quota in terms of quality or quantity, which of course would be TBD later) there are always the most deserving writers in position to be contributors instead of people who just happen to have a lot of reviews written in 2006 or people who are staff favorites because they write sick reviews once a year.
| | | I'd really appreciate if someone could do the new George Clinton and Straylight Run records.
| | | I like the new Sputnikmusic news logo.
| | | Taproot are still going? Jeezus!
| | | TWILIGHT OF THE THUNDER GOD!

| | | Sounds like we are in for a reality tv show around here with the selection of two new staff members!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tune in next time!
| | | Coke
Dead Congregation
| | | I kind of want to know who applied. Only thing that matters is who wins.
| | | We should start taking bets. Just like college basketball and pay over the internet.
| | | I'll take the Straylight Run
| | | Even though i'm not staff or a Contributor(anymore), I can take care of Trenches(which you don't have listed)
| | | Jessica Simpson's new album is still in need of a review...;-)
Wait, no, WilliF just posted one. Heh heh...I was only joking, you guys work fast, though! This Message Edited On 09.14.08

| | | I'm going to get to The American Dollar at some point. Good album.
| | | masscows, Dead Congregation will be done. And Balls, I'm going to see if I can make time to do the George Clinton. I've had a mega-hectic, hyper-chaotic couple of weeks (alpha edition) so I'm behind. I've got to worry about new releases (Burst, All That Remains, All Shall Perish, in that order) before I tackle other stuff I want to do (Dead Congregation, Two Gallants, George Clinton, in that order).
| | | I definitely have to check Lazarus Bird, "I exterminate the I" is pretty decent, and Sigh's tribute to Venom as well. This Message Edited On 09.14.08
| | | Damn Coke, I wanted to do the new Burst album hahaha. Maybe its better that you do it seeing as I drool all over those guys hahaha. Fanboy reviews = instant neg!
| | | The new Burst just leaked like two days ago, though, so your review would probably be premature if anything. I've had an official stream for a while now.
| | | I can do the new Swallow The Sun EP, seeing as how I'm probably one of the only people who can stand them. :p
| | | what, who doesn't like Swallow the Sun?
| | | I like swallow the sun!
Maybe I should review it!
No I suppose you got first dibs on it shattered_future...
| | | If there's anyone who isn't sick of deathcore yet, maybe "I, Colossus" by A Different Breed of Killer?
| | | I really like Swallow the Sun, too...
| | | I don't.
| | | Well, the Burst is done.
