Slipknot Debuts at No. 1

2008-09-03 by badtaste | 45 Comments
Slipknot's fourth album, "All Hope is Gone", has debuted at no. 1 on Billboard's Top 200 chart, but only after a SoundScan recount. Initially, the album was announced today as a #2 debut, an incredible 13 units behind The Game's LAX. After a request by Roadrunner and WEA, a countback saw Slipknot's album with 239,516 sales, to The Game's 238,382 for LAX (a margin of 1134 albums) in its first week of sales.

"All Hope is Gone" has also debuted at no. 1 in Canada, Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia, Sweden and Finland. Second place was had in Japan, the UK, Germany, Austria, France and Belgium. Other top ten positions were seen in Norway, Ireland, Holland, Mexico and Spain.

The band's world tour is currently suspended, after drummer Joey Jordison broke his ankle.

Rather surprised myself, given that I don't think the album is as strong as their previous ones. Good ol' hype...

I am glad for them, they make music that appeals to children around my age and under. I am happy they make a success of themselves. The more talented bands, if they really care about music, probably don't really give a shit about money and fame.

They appeal to a mainstream audience because of their genre, and they are catchy, at least that's why I listened to them when I did. I don't find this shocking at all really.

I hear a lot of people complaining, I find it to be like watching My Sweet 16 but worse. On the note though, I'd rather see Slipknot on top then some of the other acts that don't need to be mentioned. New album is pretty raw btw. This Message Edited On 09.04.08

What scares me is how well The Game's album sold. At least Slipknot can play instruments (to a point).

Welcome to the sad story known as American musical taste. Fuck rap and everything to do with it.

Most of the mainstream music listeners population consist of people who dont know what the f*ck good music is. They hear it on the radio, notice its catchy, download it burn it to a cd. A couple weeks later they hear a new and favorite catchy toon and do the same thing in a never ending cycle. So thats how bands like ''this'' are on top touring the world with hit albums, that and timing. Most of the population doesnt care to actually find good music because they havnt heard it yet, they think what they hear is the good music. This Message Edited On 09.04.08

Forget all this talk about mainstream music on the charts. Jack Johnson recieves very mild exposure with every album he releases, yet his albums debut always in the top 3. Norah Jones's album 'Come Away With Me' had no airplay with a song that didn't appeal to radio stations until her album went triple platinum. What these artist have is a solid devoted fan base, along with Slipknot and Disturbed, which to me is an artist wet dream and they should be so lucky.

I'm proud of Slipknot for being true to their base while having well deserved exposure.

They've left their strongest work behind them...better to see a band take the top spot then some nonsense 'spotlight' rapper, but better still to see a good album take number 1.

Meshuggah hit at 52
White Chapel was slightly below/over 100...

sooo

if a Swedish Metal band can make it on there
if a weak deathcore band can make it on there...

THEN it is safe to assume that this gimmick is still appealing to a majority of the extreme music community. No one should be surprised.

They have double bass... doesnt that count for anything anymore?
