Neil Young to Head Big Day Out

2008-09-02 by Auldy | 21 Comments
For some strange reason, Neil Young has been tentatively named as the headlining act for the 2009 Big Day Out, Australia's largest touring rock festival. While no one is attacking Neil Young's credibility as a legend of rock, many young Australians are questioning why Mr Young is even on the tour, let alone as the headlining act, mainly because previous headliners have been:
2008 - Rage Against the Machine, Bjork
2007 - Tool, Muse
2006 - White Stripes, Iggy and the Stooges
2005 - Beastie Boys, System of a Down
and so on and so forth
Obviously Neil Young does not fit into this trend. Why was he chosen?
My Morning Jacket and Arctic Monkeys have also been penciled in.

Update!!

First announcement of lineup and dates will appear on an updated Big Day Out website on the September 30th

Also it has been announced that Neil Young will be playing some seperate appearances around Australia as follows:

Jan 21st - Brisbane Entertainment Center
Jan 24th - Sydney Entertainment Center
Jan 28th - Melbourne, Myer Music Bowl

Ah BDO. So many memories. Being spewed on by a topless girl, selling my ticket to gerg, tool's giant flaming hand, touching said spew-girls...

When the rumours suggested an older singer-songwriter was headlining, I simply presumed Nick Cave.

I'm sure no one is questioning Neil Young but he doesnt really fit in. Most of the ppl are between 15-30, like metal/indie, he doesnt really fit in with the demographic.

This isn't news, because it's still just a rumour. Line-up isn't official for another few weeks.

Big Day Out rumours are usually fairly accurate though from memory. Maybe he will more be the headliner of the 2nd stage, a'la Bjork this past year.
Switching over to teh Arctic Monkeys, it will be interesting to see if they feel that they now have the following to play the major arenas.

She was on the main stage but had the slot before RatM.

I think this is alright, but I probably won't be going unless the lineup gets seriously awesome like last year (Battles, Arcade Fire, Bjork)

I could see why they'd pick Young. A lot of those other headliners (Ratm, the stooges white stripes) probably owe a lot of influence to them.
There is also a strong chance that US festival Coachella and UK's All Tomorrow's Parties will join the crowded festival market in 2009.
Young has all but been confirmed now. The other big name attached to the BDOut is now Radiohead.
