Billboard Slights Michael Jackson 2008-02-21 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 1 Comments | Despite selling 166,000 copies last week, Michael Jackson's reissued and expanded Thriller 25 does not grace this week's Billboard Top 200 chart.
A Sony exec called the decision "unfathomable... Michael expected it to be on the Top 200 chart." However, Billboard execs were adamant that it was in line with their policy of exempting catalogue releases from the chart, a decision backed up by major retailers Wal-Mart and Best Buy, and have consigned it to te less illustrious Catalog charts.
This leaves Thriller 25 at no. 2 on Billboard's Comprehensive Chart, behind Jack Johnson's Sleep Through The Static, which reigns for a second successive week, re-igniting a debate that briefly sizzled last year when Eagles' Long Road Out Of Eden was disqualified from the Top 200 on the basis that it was exclusive to Wal-Mart.
Some quarters have once again begun suggesting that the Comprehensive Chart should become the official chart in these heady days of reissue and reunion tour fever.
