Funeral for a Friend vocalist leaves

2023-12-05 by Kurai | 61 Comments
Welsh Post Hardcore veterans Funeral for a Friend have announced the departure of their longtime vocalist Matthew Davies-Kreye, who had been singing for the band since their formation in 2001.

Alongside this announcement, the remaining remembers of the band have announced that they plan to write music again for the first time since 2015's Chapter and Verse. Their planned appearance at Slam Dunk Festival 2024 will go ahead with Holding Absence singer Lucas Woodland filling in for Davies in lead vocals.

Funeral for a Friend previously disbanded in 2016 following a farewell tour, but got back together in 2019 for some benefit shows following the terminal prognosis of their friend Stuart Brothers. This was followed by two tours in 2022 and 2023, the latter of which being a 20th anniversary celebration of their debut album Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation.

The band's statement and Matt's farewell can be read below:

"Hey folks,

It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that after 20+ years, our singer and brother Matthew Davies-Kreye has decided to move on to pastures new going forward, and leaves with all our love, respect and gratitude.

While Matt moves on, the rest of us have come out of our recent ’20 Years Casually Dressed’ anniversary tour with a renewed spark and desire to create new music together, for the first time in this lineup for many years. We’ll keep you updated on that in due course, but suffice it to say that we wouldn’t be entertaining new music if we didn’t feel the material we’re currently writing would hold up to the legacy of what we created back in the day. We hope you agree with us on that, and look forward to sharing with you next year.

As far as Slam Dunk Festival next May, we’re very pleased to share that we’ll be joined on vocals for those shows by our excellent Welsh brother Lucas Woodland, of the wonderful Holding Absence. We’re honoured that he’s lending us his immense talents for the weekend, and know that he’ll do Matty proud. We’re stoked for what will be an incredibly exciting and unique couple of performances that weekend.

We’ll keep in touch with you all between now and then, but for now we’ll sign off with a final word from Matt. Please join us in raising our fingers for one last salute."

Matthew Davies-Kreye:

"I never thought, after we called it a day back in 2016, that I would get the chance to revisit Funeral for a Friend let alone the way we did with Darran and Ryan back onboard.
Given the emotionally challenging circumstances around us coming back together to play the benefit show for Big Stu in 2019, I was so happy to see just how much love there still was for our music. Fast forward a few years and coming out the other side of a global pandemic, we have completed two of the bands largest UK tours ever (thanks in no small part to the sheer love of our fans) which is pretty mind blowing.

After the joy, fun and success of the last two tours Kris, Darran, Ryan, Gavin and Rich are eager to play more shows and explore what the band can still do creatively and I’m sure with what they have in mind their endeavours will push the band to new highs.

For me though, this is a road that I can’t walk down. I absolutely love everyone in FFAF, I love our fans and I loved these last shows we played but my life has moved on in so many ways since we first said goodbye back in 2016 that I can’t see myself being in an active band again.
So here we are, I wish Kris, Darran, Ryan, Gav and Rich all the luck and success in the world and I know they’ll be doing an incredible job and giving it everything they’ve got as always. To all of you, I can’t thank you enough for your support over the years and I can’t wait to hear you all singing along to the bands songs for many more years to come.

Take care of each other and, as always, much love.

Matt x"

I remember in 2007, one of my mates posted on their myspace wall how hard tales sucked, to which Matt replied, 'I don't see you playing in a rock band'

didn't even realize they were still together since their couple of reunion shows, thought they were just one-offs

I'd be game if they continued in the more Hardcore influenced vein of their last few albums, but as I feel Matt was the one pushing for that sound and that they haven’t really touched anything post Tales since reuniting, I feel that’s unlikely sadly.

New stuff will probably be Casually Dressed/Hours nostalgia and if I wanted to listen to that, I’d just put Casually Dressed and Hours on again.

Love this band but they haven't released anything interesting since Armageddon so I can understand Matt wanting to move on to greener pastures

They could never come close to Casually Dressed or Hours ever again anyways so it's best to call it a day

I no longer believe in bands breaking up or members leaving.

I already saddened when they disbanded in 2016. Do what you want and if you come back, I'll be there. It's the only thing I can do as a fan.

They had an EP a long time ago I cannot recall anymore that had a song in it called THE ART OF AMERICAN FOOTBALL, that was one of my favourite songs that year. my earliest memories of them.

“bring back the drummer and have no cleans. the only way forward“

That drummer (Ryan) rejoined the band for their reunion shows in 2019 and he’s been with them ever since.

This is bittersweet for me. Matt is a legendary post-hardcore vocalist, and it's hard to imagine the band without him. His lyrics and melodies were such a big part of the band's identity and sound.

On the other hand, his voice had completely gone. I dunno if anyone saw the footage of them performing at Hurricane Fest in Germany recently (check YouTube) but it was a tough watch. The remaining members are all phenomenal musicians, and I think they're self-aware enough to not just try and ape the Casually Dressed sound in 2023. They've been constantly evolving since then, so I really doubt they'd just go full nostalgia bait.

Definitely looking forward to hearing whatever they put out. Also, Lucas from Holding Absence is an insane vocalist and a great fit for Funeral. Got me considering buying a Slam Dunk ticket now. I think there's basically 0% chance that they convince him to leave Holding Absence long term, as that seems like a band that's going places, but I wouldn't be mad if they somehow did.

"They had an EP a long time ago I cannot recall anymore that had a song in it called THE ART OF AMERICAN FOOTBALL, that was one of my favourite songs that year. my earliest memories of them."

That release was Seven Ways to Scream Your Name (or Between Order and Model if you're super OG) and it's my favorite release of theirs. I listened to the fuck out of that EP for years in middle and high school.

Really sad to see Matt leave because that feels like the end of an era for me. I can't imagine FFAF without his vocals.

I saw them on what I thought was the last concert for their then already deceased friend but after that they just kept touring lol so the shocking part of that announcement isn‘t Matt leaving but the fact they want to continue and write new stuff. Very skeptical about that to be honest. Although Woodland is a fantastic vocalist so we‘ll see. Maybe another band name would have been more fitting, dunno.

Nah. His vocals had been on a downward spiral for a long time. This wasn't a one-off occurrence, just the worst example in recent times. Ever since he switched to the more aggressive style in Conduit, his voice just became shot.

There's a video of them doing 1% live in studio and his voice is pretty rough there, but yeah, just watch any live show from the last couple of years and it's not great.

They’ve said they are, but we'll see if something actually comes of that.

I’ve also been reminded that there was one show around 2004 where Matt couldn't play due to an abscess. As a result, Adam Lazzara from Taking Back Sunday (who they were touring with at the time) filled on lead vocals.

Wow. Matt leaves FFAF and Stephen goes on indefinite hiatus from touring with Anberlin. Wow, what an end of an era. Those two bands were huge to me in high school and college and really ever since. Lucas sounds like a perfect replacement. I'm looking forward to hearing footage of FFAF with him singing.

Always held hope they would come back to the states, but grateful I was able to see them live twice in my lifetime. If new material does indeed drop, of course I will give it a chance... But I cannot see it being successful with Matt not being a part of it.

If I had to rank:

Casually Dressed
Welcome Home Armageddon
Conduit
Hours
Tales Don't Tell Themselves
Chapter and Verse
Memory and Humanity
