R.I.P. Shane MacGowan

2023-11-30 by DadKungFu STAFF | 24 Comments
Songwriter, folk hero and punk godfather Shane MacGowan has, after a long and courageous struggle with existence, laid his body to rest. While many eulogies will focus on his notorious substance abuse, he will be better remembered as the shining heart and soul of one of the greatest Irish musical acts, and for his embodiment of the great literary tradition of that country. He leaves the world bereft of an inimitable singer, a poet in the truest sense, an inveterate though repentant asshole and a worthy addition to the pantheon of the truly great artists of our time. He will fondly remembered and sorely missed.

Really sad news. Though, given his long history of substance abuse, I'm kinda surprised he lived as long as he did. RIP

Oh the words that he spoke

Seemed the wisest of philosophies

There's nothing ever gained

By a wet thing called a tear

When the world is too dark

And I need the light inside of me

I'll walk into a bar

And drink fifteen pints of beer

I had to get out of bed for this and down a pint for Mr. MacGowan.

Cheers, Shane. Thank you for the music. May you rest in peace.

Saw Hamilton Lethaysheyxshehf (however you spell his last name) from The Walkmen post about this. Didn't know he covered a Pogues song until I saw someone mention it in the comments.

I bet Colin Meloy is taking this hard. A lot of The Decemberists' early stuff was heavily influenced by The Pogues, particularly Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash.

One of the voices of my childhood. Could make you feel like weeping, laughing and fighting all in the space of three songs. Been in mourning this last couple of days for this one.

'Rainy Night In Soho is a top ten song all time in my book.' - extremely this.
