R.I.P. Ray Shulman

2023-04-01 by Brendan Schroer STAFF | 15 Comments
Scottish musician Ray Shulman -- best known for his work in the classic 70s progressive rock band Gentle Giant -- has passed away at the age of 73. The following statement was released on the band's social media pages:

"It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Raymond Shulman on March 30th, 2023.
Raymond passed away peacefully at home in London after battling a long illness. He is survived by his wife Barbara Tanner and his brothers Derek & Philip Shulman. His family requests privacy at this very sad time."

The brother of fellow Gentle Giant members Derek and Phil, Shulman was a highly accomplished multi-instrumentalist. While his main instrument was the bass guitar, he was also skilled at violin, trumpet, recorder, and acoustic and electric guitar -- all of which he played on the band's records. He was also one of the band's primary songwriters, alongside keyboardist Kerry Minnear.

Check out the video below for one of Gentle Giant's live performances, featuring excerpts from their 1972 album Octopus:

Don’t really fuck with prog rock (or much of prog anything for that matter) but with all of the praise this guys getting along with the extremely solid avgs of their run in the 70’s, yeah I’ll definitely check this band out.

RIP

RIP very hard. He was one one of my favourite musicians. Gentle Giant was always one of my favourite bands, probably the best prog band ever.
