New The Dear Hunter EP

2021-10-22 by sempiturtle | 28 Comments
Indie prog band The Dear Hunter have dropped a new EP, titled 'The Indigo Child'. The EP serves as an intro for the band's new project following the completion of the 'Acts' series in 2016. The release features two brand new full length songs, 'The Indigo Child' and 'The Indigo Child (Reprise)', along with several instrumentals meant to be the soundtrack for a yet to be released visual component of the project. 'The Indigo Child' is also the band's first musical release since their 'All as is All Should Be' EP in 2017.

According to a livestream Q&A on the band's Pillar fanpage, 'The Indigo Child' project is set to be a series of full length albums accompanied by a visual series. The first full length, 'Antimai', is set to release Spring 2022.

idk how I feel yet

saw them on the Act V tour after Casey had thrown his voice out and they took the mini-gap. they closed with Mustard Gas and he sounded like he hadn’t broken a sweat. definitely worth it if you get the chance

I'll need to watch the movie tonight before I rate it, but this isn't doing a lot for me. The general soundscapes are nice, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of cohesion here.

I think he said if there would ever be an Act VI it would not be an LP

At a minimum, there's a musical component. A titled LP slip cover with artwork for Act 6 shipped with "The Acts" box set.

This is awesome.

oh hype, I assumed it was just going to be a movie

but apparently also Indigo Child is going to be very multimedia-y

I'm reminded of Mae in terms of "cinematic rock band after hiatus turns to sci-fi effects" except this is, so far, way better than Mae's latest

This is an EP? I added it as an album, I didn't see it anywhere labeled as an EP.

It's 8 songs and 29 minutes so it's on the edge, but given that the band is referring to the "first LP" of this project as something that will be released in the future it seems this is just viewed as an EP or preview set.

If they mentioned in a Q&A, fine by me. There are many 28-30 minutes albums out these days.

So, this is a soundtrack to accompany Ring 8, a short film debuting on Dust, a free streaming platform. Casey did a lot of the editing and motion/animation.

They intend to release an actual album in the spring with music to follow up on this concept.

This is an album, not an EP.

I remember seeing this and was pretty surprised. It is an acknowledgement that the project has been left unfinished which feels strange.

Yep six was the initial idea. I was however quite satisfied with V as a conclusion. Both storywise as well musicwise.

It's cool that they're going in a sci-fi direction. Their electronic stuff on The Color Spectrum was nice and the sound on this is great.

I'm not sure about the songwriting, very fragmented but not necessarily bad.

Apparently it's an intro to a bigger project? As this stands now, it's basically a pointless EP. Over half of it is just interlude passages that don't go anywhere. I don't really get why this needed to see the light of day.

You guys should check out the short film, that's what this music is supporting.

Thank goodness it’s not 10 EPs or something overly ambitious

There's a note with the collection that says once it's completed it'll be sent out. It's not abandoned. They've done stuff like Migrant and The Color Spectrum in between acts.

Very true. This is probably just a means to help financially support the band while they finish act VI. Probably going to have more strings on it, which is costly.

This EP acts as the soundtrack for the short film and as a prologue for the future Indigo Child albums. The Indigo Child is a sci-fi story Casey has written and will be the main focus for the band going forward. Act VI isn’t coming any time soon.

Since this is just the prologue and the soundtrack for the short film, I don’t think the songs on this EP are indicative of what the sound will be on future Indigo Child albums.

Love the Acts to bits but this is just a weird collection of meandering soundscapes and the same song twice with the words "Indigo child" sung three hundred times. Very confusing so far.
