METAFIVE album cancelled 2021-07-28 by dimsim3478 | 4 Comments | The Japanese supergroup METAFIVE has announced that the upcoming release of their long-awaited sophomore album METAATEM has been cancelled (https://wmg.jp/metafive/news/86575). The album was scheduled to be released on August 11, just two weeks from today. Pre-orders for the album have been open since May 17, and the band has already released two singles to promote it (Oyamada's "Environmental" and Imai's "The Paramedics"). Whether the album has been shelved indefinitely or merely postponed has yet to be clarified.
The release cancellation follows community and media backlash against METAFIVE's guitarist Keigo Oyamada (a.k.a. Cornelius), whose history of horrific schoolyard bullying resurfaced two weeks ago after it was revealed that he would be helping to compose the music for the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Oyamada has since stepped down from this role, and he issued statements regarding the controversy on his official website (http://cornelius-sound.com/) and Twitter account (http://twitter.com/corneliusjapan).
METAFIVE was also scheduled to play their first live show in 5 years this Monday (July 26) at KT Zepp Yokohama, but the concert was cancelled a few days beforehand, ostensibly due to public health concerns relating to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Both METAFIVE and Cornelius are still listed as headlining acts for the upcoming Fuji Rock Festival '21 (which will be held from August 20 to 22), but it now seems unlikely that either of them will be appearing at the festival.
METAFIVE consists of Oyamada, Yukihiro Takahashi (Yellow Magic Orchestra), Yoshinori Sunahara (Denki Groove), Towa Tei, Tomohiko Gondo (anonymass, pupa) and Leo Imai. Originally formed in 2014 as a backing band for Takahashi's solo concerts, METAFIVE became a fully-fledged band in the following year, and were remarkably active in 2016, releasing a studio album, an EP, and a live album/Blu-ray in addition to playing numerous live shows. However, the band did not perform live again or release any new material until they announced their return in July 2020, shortly before releasing the single "Environmental".
