Anathema on indefinite hiatus

2020-09-23 by judasgoat | 35 Comments
British prog legends Anathema have stated on their Facebook page that they are going on an indefinite hiatus, citing "events over this year." The band were planning an album to be released on Mascot Label Group this year, as well as a tour that was postponed for 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour will likely be canceled, but the progress on the album as of now is currently unknown.

2020 managed to dismantle a band that's been actively delivering good and unique music for almost 30 fucking years. Jesus Christ

I mean, they took the majority of the '00s off and came back as strong as ever, so fair call ig. Great band.

sad news but I hope the break means they'll come back with more inspiration than they had on the last album

Eh, Anathema was my favorite band for a long time but they lost me hardcore after A Natural Disaster. No big loss at this point, IMO.

I still spin Serenades frequently though. Also the early demos, the Crestfallen EP, and Pentecost III. I don't really listen to their more prog / rock stuff anymore though. Don't really listen to those styles at all anymore TBH.

"A Simple Mistake" has been my anthem the past couple weeks so this is pretty jarring to say the least. Hopefully what Johnny said is true this time around.

I liked "The Optimist", but overall I think it paled in comparison to even just the 2 previous albums... maybe they need some space from each other to find inspiration or yearning for the band dynamic again... or whatever their reason for it. If the world seems to be ending - I would think it would prompt striking while the iron's heat still exists... but I guess it can go the other way, as with anything... it would be badass if their situation mirrored Katatonia's for sure

2020 continues to suck harder than a new vacuum cleaner. I only hope it is temporary and that they'll come back with a super strong Weather Systems/We're Here-level album.

LOL, why do you keep deleting my increasingly cleaned up comment?

OK, here is yet an even cleaner version:

Hopefully they'll use the time off to learn how to write music without relying on flamboyant, histrionic, saccharine emotional displays. I mean, I love hearing middle aged men go on and on about their fee fees and how much they love each other as much as the next guy, but it's getting a little bit stale.
