New Refused Track (Cyberpunk 2077)

2019-07-03 by decisions | 115 Comments

Swedish punk legends Refused have released a song in collaboration with Cyberpunk 2077, the upcoming first-person RPG from the developer of The Witcher 3, CD Project Red.

In the game, the band plays the role of the fictional band Samurai, whom Canadian actor Keanu Reeves' character is a member of.

This is the first studio release by the band since their 2015 comeback album Freedom, which released to mixed reception.

who gives a shit? stephen king said the shining movie was ass and he was (and continues to be) dead wrong. cd projekt red is one of the best devs for world building and so much more. ridiculously generous and passionate people, seems kind of dumb to write off their new project based on some alpha footage and mostly cinematic trailers.

It all makes sense now. Not that Refused are NYHC, but they certainly been influenced byit.

"stephen king said the shining movie was ass and he was (and continues to be) dead wrong."

I mean he's right, The Shining movie actively destroys everything that made the book frightening, emotional, impactful, etc. The film is just a nicely directed but critically crappy horror story that is deliberately nonsensical. It ruins the source material for some pathetic sense of artistic ego. It's a garbage film for garbage people.

And Cyberpunk will probably be a good game but I have no doubt that CDProjektRed have no clue what the genre is actually about. Everything they've said so far shows a vital misunderstanding of the genres themes and messaging, instead taking blanket aesthetic elements and giving the wrong emphasis to the wrong points they want to make, especially their misunderstanding of how transhumanism is supposed to be represented. They're extremely tone deaf. Still, game will be fun as hell.

Cyberpunk has been dead for over 20 years, and it has been reduced to absolutely nothing past being a cheap retroism. If anything were to somehow resurrect the radical spirit of its critique of capitalism and life under neoliberalism, it certainly wouldn't be a AAA game with Keanu Reeves.

Gallantin
July 4th 2019
1903 Comments

I don't agree that cyberpunk is necessarily dead, not when Blade Runner 2049 came out in the last few years and was perfect, though I do agree that a AAA game with Keanu Reeves is probably not what the genre needs to progress, especially in the clumsy narrative hands of CDProjektRed

The Shining movie does suck. And ill never understand people complaining about something not adhering to what the genre it belongs to is "supposed" to be about. make it about what you want it to be about, as long as it works.

"As long as it works" being the operative statement, the genre of cyberpunk having some pretty strict bars on what makes it work

Look the problem with comparing the film and the book is that they're different mediums. I think it's fine that Kubrick strayed from the source material, in fact I encourage it. If Kubrick had set out to turn Stephen King's The Shining into a film he would have been doomed from the start because the viewer would always be comparing it in his mind to the book. Instead he made Stanley Kubrick's The Shining which is a hell of a film, perhaps not the masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey is but still one jaw-dropping, feverish flick. It's haunting and gruelingly slow - giving the viewer his own taste of cabin fever as he squirms in his seat waiting for something worthwhile to happen. And does it pay off? Let's just say if a sea of blood flowing out of an open elevator in slow motion is the last thing I see before I die, well, listening to this godawful Refused song may have been worth it.

The book and the movie are two different beasts irregardless. King can throw all the hissy fits he wants about the film lacking the book's "emotional core" or whatever but its hardly an adaptation and much more interesting as a result.

And this thread, off topic as it is, is nevertheless exponentially more interesting than the song.

I agree with ghost here tbh, there's a difference between heavy and aggressive. When you talk about aggressive, it should mean angry, fresh and vivid. Those who have been heavy since they started lack the ability to show aggression or show a new level of it as they grow more into their careers.

"William Gibson trashed this game hard, along with most of the OG cyberpunks. Not interested honestly"

Hmmmmm.. after some more videos and art from the game, Gibson backtracked on his first words about the game
He said this about the game after last year's gameplay video: "Looks *much* better to me than the earlier teaser. Has "dirt in the corners" texture."

And "especially in the clumsy narrative hands of CDProjektRed" -- what? What BS is this? All Witcher games have overall fantastic writing, one of the best in the biz with depth that modern Bioware or Bethesda are only dreaming about
