2019-06-10 by Toondude | 42 Comments
Baroness have officially started streaming their fifth studio album Gold & Grey on NPR's website. It is the band's first album since 2015's Purple and is also the band's first album with Gina Gleason, their first (and currently only) female member. It is also the band's last chromatically-themed album.

The mix really isn't bothering me as much as I expected. Really enjoyed the album.

I honestly kind of hate the way it's mixed/mastered, but I suppose it's a matter of preference

The mix gets me really exhausted after like two songs and I ended up having to stop it and come back to it later. I appreciate a band experimenting with production, and sticking to their guns on artistic decisions in general, but I do think this needs work regardless. It needs to at least be consistently listenable.

The spacier mellow bits sound just fine, but whenever they try to really rock out the mix just gets so muddy and blown-out :/

The first track on here genuinely hurts to listen to because of how boomy it is but it's pretty much fine after that. It would still definitely benefit from the mixing that Yellow & Green had (I maintain that album's heavier moments sound absolutely flawless and should be a standard for artists in this style), but it's not as bad as I thought it would be.

Not really blowing my mind the way Purple did on first listen, but it's definitely good. The vocal harmonies on here are crazy.

'Next album Sword & Shield?' Nice.

I haven't checked anything after Blue, I'm working on the premise that the first two 'generations' are the best because that's how this works, right?

why the hell is this band labelled as progressive on here? They are great, yes, but I genuinely think that tag is misplaced

Well said. This is my issue with it, it's not like a "oh I don't like that snare, or the kick drum is too flubby" kinda subjective issue. Listening to this kind of production is just exhausting.

Shame about some of the mixing, because this is some of their best work imo. Tourniquet is gorgeous, Pale Sun reminds me of Ulver's latest in a good way, and the quieter songs are all rad.

The quieter songs are surprisingly the best part, easily their most experimental work to date. Production is fucking ass though, I refuse to give this anything more than a 3.

The black album will just be constant fuzz. You won't be able to hear anything but fuzz.

@neekafat you mean yellow and green? or is that an inside joke i don't get?
if so then yes. it's even better than purple but the production destroys any enjoyment from it.

oh, had no idea haha
i'd recommend the red album or the blue record if you want to try them. their first and second eps are also great but they are more sludge metal instead of the prog metal/rock they developed later on.

This isn't really metal or prog, kinda more psychedelic rock with some metal influence sprinkled throughout

bananatossing
June 12th 2019

yes it does. the singles "seasons" and "borderlines" are clear standouts but i really liked the quieter moments like the second song, the closer and a few others i can't recall the names.

edit: "This isn't really metal or prog, kinda more psychedelic rock with some metal influence sprinkled throughout"

this is true, though. they've been abandoning the prog metal since the blue record.

For fuck's sake, this sounds like their best since Blue, but the fucking production kills it. Jesus christ.

If they're going to keep working with Fridmann they should just go full-out on the mellow psych-rock and ditch the loud riffy metal/rock stuff because it's apparent he is incapable of competently producing the latter kind of music.

Pikazilla
June 12th 2019

But that's what makes them so good imo - the combination of metal riffing and psych rock, no?

bananatossing
June 12th 2019
2328 Comments

yeah i don't know if they can pull it off. they tried to ditch the metal influence with yellow and green and it wasn't as successful as blue record or purple. what they need to do is move on to another producer. it's very irritating that some of their best material sounds this way.

Anyone remember when Letlive. released "Blackest Beautiful" and it was a supremely dissapointing follow up? This isn't quite that. However, the production on Gold and Grey is definitely intentional, and questionable. If I had a 1967 Mustang, I wouldn't cover it in doublesided tape and bellybutton lint.

@Pikazilla: 100% agree, musically this is their best since Blue. It's a shame that just like with Purple the production drags it down to the ground. Honestly I can't listen to more than a few songs in a row, even if I like them.
