RIP Talk Talk's Mark Hollis

2019-02-26 by ZIG | 33 Comments
Mark Hollis, lead singer of post-rock band Talk Talk, has been reported dead at the age of 64. Although no official confirmation has yet been given, but a number of former bandmates and friends have paid tribute to Hollis online.

Talk Talk achieved their greatest success with some singles in the early 80's, including "Talk Talk", "Such a Shame" and "It’s My Life", later covered by No Doubt. At the end of the decade, they continued to have critical acclaim yet commercially less successful, thanks to the albums Spirit of Eden, in 1988 and Laughing Stock, in 1991, before disbanding.

The news of Hollis’s death was broken on Instagram by Paul Webb, Talk Talk's bass player, also known as Rustin Man.

An amazing man in the world of music, could craft moody pop perfection and also drop one of the most brooding albums ever in “Laughing Stock”, very saddened by this, RIP

this really really sucks. with his death it's also like the 80's died ... just how I feel. his appearance in the ''It's my life'' video was a benchmark of nostalgia for me. i idolized him in how he did his own thing and was anti-music business. the music the band put out at the end of their career was extremely influential and groundbreaking...

even weirder, I was just listening to Eden by them.

MarsKid, take an hour to listen to Spirit of Eden on the best speakers you can find. Be patient, don't let your phone or anything else distract you. It's one of the greatest musical experiences I've ever had. Laughingstock may be even better, although it takes a little more patience to appreciate fully.

R.I.P. to a brilliant musician. Talk Talk's journey from regular 80's new wave to experimental/art rock masterpieces is one of the greatest arcs in pop music history.

Such a tremendous loss to not only British music but the entirety of the medium as a whole. So many great songs and albums... his musical influence has spread so far, that he will never be forgotten.

RIP.

I still can't believe Such a Shame is what these guys will be remembered for (by the masses)

Spirit of Eden is a captivating piece of art. Laughing Stock & The Colour of Spring too. RIP

It’s crazy, I heard “It’s My Life” on a soccer game on TV so I add it to my Apple Music, then I come on here and see this. RIP extremely hard. And to find out that his band went and helped make (from what I’ve read) post-rock, I will definitely be diving in to their albums.

This news is devastating to me on the level of Bowie, Lemmy, and Chris Cornell. Talk Talk's last three albums are some of my favorite records ever. Some of the most immaculately produced, spiritual, beautiful, and influential material ever recorded, and he had such a distinct, beautiful voice as well. He didn't just make music; he made art. Shame he's still largely underappreciated these days.

It's a shame we could never get more material from him in his lifetime, but he left a resounding legacy nonetheless. RIP
