I always used to say that as much as I loved Muse's heavier moments, they'd be able to make something really cool if they went full balls-to-the-wall with their electro sound rather than just sticking it in uncomfortably whenever the mood hits.
I'm very sad to say that I feel I was wrong.
This might grow on me, it's not completely hopeless, but I really wish it wasn't by Muse.
| |
I'd say Bellamy's voice and vocal delivery doesn't suit the music at all.
Also, good to see you around these parts MTH. Haven't seen you around in a while.
| |
I actually like the new song. Not too crazy about the previous ones though.
| |
good neon god.
| |
That cover art is the gayest thing ive ever seen
| |
song is actually aight but the video RULES. It's like new Tron + the old PS2 game Amplitude + so much neon, and I love it, only sort of ironically
| |
not nearly as intolerable as the other singles, but they really need to just stop.
| |
That cover art is pretty awesome ngl but ugh fucking muse
| |
Definitely the best of the four singles so far, still just alright.
| |
i will be dead before i figure out why anyone ever liked this band
| |
I want to die
| |
This is the best song Muse has released in over a decade.
I'll give it a C.
| |
I want to die [2]
| |
I think this song is fantastic.
| |
hot take: this band has always kind of sucked
| |
It's not a hot take it's the truth
| |
Missed opportunity with "Dark Side of the Muse" but whatever.
| |
They'd be a lot better if Matt's vocals weren't so fucking awful to listen too.
| |
fucking shameless, jesus christ
| |
Though Contagion was great.
| |
I don't like that these guys have such a cool band name.
| |
It's not very cool tbh
| |
Probably not, but "muse" is one of my favorite words.
| |
I've gotta be honest, guys. I fucking love this, it's so much fun
| |
there we go kalkwiese
| |
I just listened to it one, but daaamn, I did not expect this to be this good. The other three tracks are pretty mixed imo. Dig Down ist just boring, Something Human is good in a strange way imo and Thought Contagion is decent at least. So this album pretty much follows the tradition of The Resistance, The 2nd Law and Drones. Which means it's will be a mixed bag. Veeery mixed.
| |
Please, please end this misery.
| |
Song is awesome and shits all over everything released since Dig Down. It also has several elements that are similar to OOS/Absolution/BH&R/T2L.
Don't like this albums aesthetic or art at all
| |

You and me fucking both. Like they occasionally almost have moments of greatness with their new stuff but its very fleeting.
| |
So much wasted talent in this band for the last 12 years.
| |
Yeah I agree with everyone saying this is great. The more I listen the more I like it.
| |
Man, Dom's fallen so hard. He used to be one of my favorite drummers. For shits and giggles I used this song as a drum warmup. I literally played his part without missing a single beat. And I had never heard the song before then.
| |
Yeah the drumming is definetly consistently disappointing on those 4 singles
Muse has never been a "drumming" band though tbh, they were more about awesome riffs, fuzzy bass lines and unbelievably high falsetto notes
| |
Muse is just "we live in a society" : the band
| |
Terrible self parodying songwriting, braindead lyrics, inappropriately pompous vocals... it's post black holes muse alright.
| |
"Terrible self parodying songwriting, braindead lyrics, inappropriately pompous vocals... it's post black holes muse alright."
Hard disagree, Dig Down would be the choice for this comment
| |
Yeah I honestly don’t get the hate on this song. It sounds like it could be on BH&R. It’s like it’s just become a thing to hate Muse. The last few singles are worrisome but this ones solid imo.

Muse 1999-2006: average band
Muse 2009-current year: one of the worst bands out there
| |
This song is pretty average, and aside from the dated 80s drums, it's inoffensive. At this point, that's all it needs to be to be considered one of the good songs on the album
The bare minimum of competence is now considered praise-worthy for Muse
| |
One thing that does bother me is that you have an incredible bassist in Chris Wolstenholme and you make him play root notes
| |
"The Dark Side" lol, c'mon Muse.
| |
muse makes music for guys that say "you sir just won the internet"
| |
Bellamy used to assfuck Kate Hudson. For that alone I respect him.
| |
The problem with Muse is that they try so hard to be ambitious that they forget to simply write good songs. This is as boring as they come melodically.
| |
I liked the song until the bridge came in. Video is amazing
| |
Live from the distant past, televised through lightspeed to the present, the future of dad rock, Muse

No it didn't become a "thing". They started to suck real hard starting from The Resistance and onwards. This more mainstream rock approach isn't something they can quite deliver. Look at this new song, for example, it has all the falsettos Bellamy ever used up until this point. It sounds like a cover band of theirs trying to write original songs. Vocals are bland, electronics are predictable, nothing worthwhile really. Look at Dig Down for example. It's basically Madness 2. They are aware of their singles' success and will try anything to be relevant again. I mean who else releases the first single to an album 1 and a half years before its release? I dislike the recent Muse for both their greedy approach and the bland songwriting.
| |
It's a thing to hate Muse tho.
| |
"stop recycling shade treb"
It's funny every time though
| |
"It's a thing to hate Muse tho."
It might be for some people. I doubt that anyone on this thread hates Muse because they are Muse tho.
| |
Right here brother
| |
I absolutely, 100% think that some people around here hate Muse just for being Muse.
Not denying that their last couple of albums have been dissapointing (to say the least), but they can still release pretty good tracks like this one.
| |
Good song
| |
The only song of the four singles I've enjoyed.
*sigh*...this band, will I ever like anything they make again?
| |
This trebor dude is the equivalent of a YouTube troll in this site
| |
the fact that this article isn't called "'Dark Side' of the Muse" makes me sad
| |
Music for people who post Al Bundy copypasta on Facebook news articles.
| |
Point is — they aren’t all bad. The last few albums have all had a handful of great tracks, especially Drones (which was actually a very good album in general/overall).
But some people on this site talk about them like they’re Nickelback or freakin Limp Bizkit it something.
It’s all good, just an observation.
| |
"But some people on this site talk about them like they’re Nickelback or freakin Limp Bizkit it something." [2]
For real, i doubt most of the haters actually take their time to listen. Most of them just hate them for the lulz
| |
Yeah they're just Jealous. Total Hit Job. FAKE NEWS. Sad.
| |
haha nah the last few singles have all been trash
| |
Well, that was terrible.
| |
That album art has gotta be fan made...right...RIGHT??
| |
it actually was, they got some fan who was a graphic designer to do it lol
| |
Oh ffs
| |
lol album cover looks like some movie poster for a cheesy sci fi flick
| |
I think that's the whole point of the cover.
| |
Has there ever been a band that has deteriorated so rapidly in quality and most people's opinion?
Origin of symmetry was unbelievable in its time and still is but my god I can't even stomach that anymore because of how unappealing they have become.
| |
So you're not enjoying the album anymore because of their later work. That's just sad dude..
| |
yah theyve gone from fairly respected band to nickelback status
i agree it shouldnt tarnish their earlier work tho
| |
What the hell? A new Muse song that is actually good?
| |
No one has mentioned the fact the Owl City had the exact same cover for his new record. There isn't room for two cheesy sci-fi film-esque artwork, lads.
| |
Definitely think this is the best of the four songs released so far. Probably a little biased here cause Muse is my favorite band, but I am hopeful for this album. Just hoping for more consistency than Drones
| |
''So you're not enjoying the album anymore because of their later work. That's just sad dude..''
Sad but understandable actually. I've lost all my respect for them with the last couple of albums, and this cringe-worthy track is the cherry (with the stone still in and stalk attached) on top of a cake that's past its sell-by date...
| |
This song makes me want to hear more rock bands tackle synthwave
| |
... really? I almost cannot even see how this can be liked, in what way?
| |
In various ways tbh. It's really solid and what I wanted Muse to do without knowing it, haha
| |
Happy you dig, always a wonder that opinions can differ so much. This is just not for me.
| |
@Trifolium There are several hints to songs from OOS, especially in the verses. Those echo some parts of Space Dementia, Micro Cuts and even Darkshines. The sound in general is also not to dissimilar from their more electronic songs from Black Holes and Revelations (say Map Of The Problematique or Easily).
You can find really very detailed discussions about how this song is essentially a pure Muse song with synthwave aesthetics on Reddit etc
| |
Yup reminds me of Black Holes. Almost sounds like it could be a lost track off of that album or something. Love it.
| |
I actually don't hear that at all. Matt's singing is completely on the wrong side of sappy for me and I hate the instrumentation. Does not resemble OOS or BH&R at all imo, because I like both the singing and the instrumentation on those. This is ugly and all wrong.
But hey, if you hear all this and like it, that's cool. Wish I did too, because they've made some delish tunes in the past!
| |
It could be like Black Holes if all the catchiness and energy was drained out of it.
| |
Exactly, soulless. And ugly.
| |
The album artwork is incredible, problem is I can't decide if that's in a way which is irredeemably awful, or so we-don't-give-a-sh*t-ridiculous that I actually like it.
| |
Hahaha, that's very true!
| |
"No one has mentioned the fact the Owl City had the exact same cover for his new record. There isn't room for two cheesy sci-fi film-esque artwork, lads."
That's because the Owl City cover looks like total shit compared to this one. The Muse one at least has a well done 80's vibe to it, the Owl City one looks like some shitty vaporwave art.
