Popstodon

| |
yeee
| |
any hope i had of this album being passable has faded away completely
| |
The track is catchy and fun, but I hope there'll be some heavier tunes on the new album too.
| |
Catchy as fuck...and I like it
| |
Really lame. I'm hoping this is the only poppy song just for the sake of it.
| |
It's alright, first single was much better
| |
It's okay i guess
| |
yawn
| |
damn catchy. Definitely not their best but it is no indicator for the rest of the record anyway, don't worry guys.
| |
Hmm, quite a simple song that caught me off guard for sure. I don't think it is nearly as good as the previous song, but it's a nice. Hopefully it will be a nice break from the darker proggy stuff....
| |
sucks they're sliding more and more towards the heY HOOoo lets fuCkin' goOO realm
| |
Wow they managed to suck everything that made them unique and interesting out of them over two albums
| |
I love it and wouldn't even mind if the whole album had catchier hooks like this.
| |
Im actually curious about the thought process that went into making this song. Seriously did they lose their fucking minds or something
| |
I don't mind it, fuck me right
| |
Yeah man, you're not allowed to like what you like, because music is objectively good or bad.
| |
it's kay
| |
not great, but singles are never an album's best songs so lets not jump to conclusions.
| |
subjectivity? never heard of it
| |
There are occasions where the singles are pretty great though. Magma comes to mind as a recent one. Hopefully, that isn't the case for this one.
| |
"Hopefully it will be a nice break from the darker proggy stuff...."
Why would you ever hope for such a thing? That's like saying "I hope Converge take a nice break from their faster and angrier stuff to make a pleasant acoustic folk album." Like... No. That's who they are and that's when they're at their best.
| |
awful....
Not because its not 'heavy' 'metal' whatever.....Just because its lame af
| |
I liked it. It's not great, but it's nice and catchy. Hopefully the rest of the album will be better though.
| |
@ellioot I think he means in the context of the album, for variety's sake. I'm inclined to agree with him because while this isn't a great single, perhaps it's a nice mid-album shake up.
| |
It's pretty alright, not special but decent. Waiting for the whole thing to enlighten the world with my judgement.
| |
"Why would you ever hope for such a thing? That's like saying "I hope Converge take a nice break from their faster and angrier stuff to make a pleasant acoustic folk album." Like... No. That's who they are and that's when they're at their best."
lol dummy I meant it would be the one poppy song serving as break from the other 8 tracks on the album that are proggy
Edit: Yes, thank you Scuro that's what I meant
| |
Mastodon reposted an interview they did the other day from their Blood Mountain days and man, did reading that make me long for them to make an album like that again. I love Crack the Skye, but there is something about Leviathan and Blood Mountain that really made the band for me. They had the ability to write these really frantic and busy songs that some how also managed to come across as psychedelic. They don't make songs like "Hunters of the Sky" or "Siberian Divide" or "Blood and Thunder" anymore and, although they still release decent albums, nothing seems like it will ever reach that level of intensity again.
| |
Everything I hated about the last 2 albums in one song.. yikes.
| |
it's alright. not the end of the world or anything.
| |
haven't listened to their last couple releases and have never been a fan (also they're terrible live), but when did these guys turn into cookie cutter radio rock?
| |
I wonder if they stopped being hungry, ya know? Like with "Leviathan" and "Blood Mountain" they were still really trying to cut their teeth in the metal community, but when they reached "The Hunter" and "Once More" they were made and didn't need to have that fire under their asses.
| |
this is ok. I could see it working in the context of the album.
| |
Really? I mean... it directly follow the previous song. I see no connection between the two.
| |
something like that cos
both times i saw them a decade ago they played like a band that had injected a lethal dose of bear tranquilizer prior to taking the stage.
| |
Might as well just be QOTSA - track rating 2/5
| |
Well, I guess at the very least this band isn't lying to themselves anymore.
| |
@satellite I can't tell if that's a good thing or a bad thing haha
| |
"Might as well just be QOTSA"
QOTSA is mush better at this style of music.
| |
these guys are still around? fuck
| |
yeah it's like qotsa if they forgot to add a hook
| |
death - I didn't say they were great at being QOTSA, in fact at the last count they're not even as good at being QOTSA as the Arctic Monkeys or Frank Carter.
| |
oh i absolutely meant it as a dig cos
| |
i still really like these guys tbh. their last album is a solid 3.5-4 imo.
| |
Eh it's just poppy, I've heard much worse.
| |
The vocals are an improvement but the song's just average. I don't like it when they go pop.
| |
song's alright, bet it will grow.
| |
Had to go back and listen to Remission to purge myself of whatever this is
| |
its just a mastodon 3.5 track, calm down guys
| |
I haven't listened to this yet, but I imagine people are being overdramatic as usual.
| |
First single was awesome.
This one...will be forever skipping on the album.
| |
Ewwwwwwwww wtf is this? There's so little energy here. Makes me cri.
| |
Definitely not the type of sound I was hoping for... Oh, well.
| |
Forgettable song, shame cos Sultan's Curse rules.
| |
Solid, relaxing stuff.
| |
yea dont bring up QOTSA with this..
Forgettable song, shame cos Sultan's Curse rules. [2]
| |
Wtf, is this really Mastodon? I had to double check to make sure they weren't making some elaborate joke.
| |
'Why would you ever hope for such a thing? That's like saying "I hope Converge take a nice break from their faster and angrier stuff to make a pleasant acoustic folk album."'
tbf, slower converge stuff is always phenomenal
| |
Both so far are fairly shit.
They're doing a making of too, its on part 2 now
| |
QOTSA comparison is right on. I was listening to the track trying to put my finger on where I'd heard this before. Nailed it Doof.
| |
some old guy took this song literally apparently and exposed himself in a mall to some kids and hes been arrested and he considering a lawsuit on the band: http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Plymouth-Township-Plymouth-Meeting-Mall-Exposure-Flasher-Arrest-Pennsylvania-396859131.html
| |
Ahahaha, Plymouth... good ol' PA
| |
Wow. The song was so bad it caused a man to expose himself to children.

Published October, 2016
| |
if this was a new song released by QOTSA you guys would lose your shit. that being said, I still don't enjoy it
| |
song has as much staying power as a queef in the wind
| |
qotsa is accurate, it's even a little weezer'ish I'd say
| |
bring back curl of the burl
| |
this sucksssss
| |
This is really not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Sure it's more of a rock song, it also is hard to appreciate it on it's own merits as it is following the much better track that was released first. It would have made more sense to release this track first, then the other one.
Either way, the bridge on this rocks. Seriously.
| |
Is it bad that I like this more than Sultan's Curse?
| |
Yes, the hell's wrong with you.
| |
the problem with Mastodon doing songs like this is that none of them can sing live at all
| |
It's a fun song, but isn't as unique as what they had on leviathan or blood mountain. Like many others have said, this could be a QOTSA song..
| |
turned it off after one minute. I've heard all I need to.
Masto-done.
| |
you lasted 50 seconds longer than i did gj
| |
This song sucks but some part of me has still grown to like it a little after hearing it five times.
| |
Mastodon at it again? will have to check
| |
This band could not possibly become any more derivative and shit
| |
Nothing special about this, but it isn't terrible. That's how I see almost all of their discography, honestly. I'm only mildly interested in this band; I've never seen what the big deal was.
| |
lol dummy I meant it would be the one poppy song serving as break from the other 8 tracks on the album that are proggy
Oh fuck lmao
| |
Good lord what happened to this band? Five seconds in and I knew I hated it.
| |
even more shit than the first one.
| |
Awesome pop song. I love Mastodon's old stuff, and I love this. I wouldn't mind if half the album was this type of pop-metal.
| |
main riff rules
i like pop music
so how is this bad
| |
holy shit, that was so much worse than I was expecting after reading your guys' comments
the lyrics, structure, and solo were all so lifeless
and I was excited after the first single about them dropping the tendencies that made the last two albums such shit
| |
Always sad to see such great artwork go to waste for such lazy compressed songwriting. only okay part was the YES A MASTODON GUITAR SOLO wich felt completely out of place on this track
| |
Are Mastodon really that popular that they need to release a "pop" single? Wtf? It's not like it's going to be a radio hit or anything.
| |
nah they're just extremely lazy and unoriginal
| |
whoa what's going on with those drums
| |
Upon further listening, this song is seriously underrated. That Solo is not to be forgotten as well. Also all of the riffs on this short banger (and there are many riffs) are face melters. If this is metal QOTSA I'm entirely on board.
| |
i mean, its really not that terrible. it just sounds like a really half-assed attempt at writing a radio-friendly song. feels like they didnt give a shit about this song at all. and the only good riff is during Brann's part but his vocals ruin that.
| |
Damn i still got an earworm from this
| |
decent radio rock
| |
LOL. awful.
| |
It sounds like Qotsa with A MASTODON GUITAR SOLO so I don't see how this is a bad thing!
They are way more popular than anyone thought they would ever get so of course there was gonna be a radio friendly tune thrown in.
| |
Actually Mrs Shemson just nailed it, main riff is so CKY
| |
Greg's "A blueprint of how to go commercial without sacrificing one's artistic identity" line still rings true here, this is the band going for a more streamlined sound without 'selling out' or pandering.
| |
The shit the song is stirring up is fucking gold.
The song is gr8
| |
it's not a bad song, but it's super derivative and these guys are capable, of far, far better tracks with pop sensibilities, let alone better tracks period.
guess we'll never get another album up to the level of their first four.
| |
Tuna is right on his last comment
| |
nah, i gotta disagree. this is pandering hard.
| |
verse riff rules ahrd
| |
This just in: AdolfChrist feels new Mastodon song is not edgy enough
More at 8

"derivative"
Pretentious way of saying "I do not like this song because of reasons".
ILJ here, the internets derivative music nerd. I feel this song is derivative because of the derivative instrumentals on this thing that just sound really derivative and when stacked up to their previous records, its quite derivative in the sense that the pop sensibilities are also derivative.
| |
tuna bro, i like your attitude
| |
Damn this is catchy, digging it quite a bit.
| |
tuna has the right idea here
| |
"This just in: AdolfChrist feels new Mastodon song is not edgy enough"
dam u got me. i have Neutral Milk Hotel 5'd, cant get more edgy than that.
| |
hipster trash
| |
radio rock trash. we can do this all day.
| |
your
| |
I meant you Adolf, Mastodon are great
| |
not this time. take off the fanboy goggles.
| |
you're*
| |
First single was so much better. I had some high hopes before this. I will be much more wary on getting the new album.
| |
You have heard 2 songs from a whole album but based on that it will be shit? nah m8, I'll wait until it comes out before deciding to take the goggles off.
| |
meh
expectations lowered
| |
really boring
| |
I like it. Relatively simplified but I'm alright with that.
| |
I really like the track. The only negative is that guitar solo doesn't match the vibe of the song.
| |
https://aanaaanaaanadaily.bandcamp.com/track/buttering-bread mastodon
| |
I'm somewhat in minority, but I feel like for going down more a much more streamlined mainstream rock route, Mastodon is doing much better then they could be. It's certainly a fun and catchy single, however I will admit they enjoyment is really on a rather shallow level, which is disappointing by Mastodons standards.
| |
The Hunter was the best of the Mastorock sound. Great album tbh
| |
Well, if nothing else this makes me appreciate that Sultan's Curse is at least an average Mastodon song.
| |
They haven't released a turd yet so I'm expecting everything will be ok.
| |
Thinking people are more so upset that the fury of songs like "Blood and Thunder" and "Colony of Birchmen" are gone. Coming from any other band this would be looked at pretty well but sure as hell not from Mastodon.
| |
i think youre wrong. The Hunter is one of my favorite Mastodon albums and i like OMRTS, and i still think this is a shit single. Crack the Skye didnt have that same fury and yet its still pretty highly regarded in their discography.
| |
@kingdeth or maybe people genuinely think this song is bad
| |
hahha as if people only admit its shit music when its Mastodon? awww Poor Mastodon.
Song sucks regardless who wrote it
| |
Well, of course not, but we can't say there's 0% bias. People have expectations, fans or not.
| |
Mastotallica, amirite? And i thought people who told me they are the new Metallica was wrong. Anyway, i am happy for them if it gives them more $ than ever. Ill stick to my underground metal.
| |
Mastodons of the stone age...
| |
