Owen/Into It. Over It. split EP

2015-06-06 by dimsim3478 | 17 Comments
These four or so years of friendship between Chicago emo/indie mainstays Evan Weiss (Into It. Over It.) and Mike Kinsella (Owen) have seen them sharing the stage in both the US and Japan as well as joining forces to form the band Their / They're / There with Naked Ally Records owner Matthew Frank; to top off this truly beautiful union of the two acclaimed musicians, their mutual label Polyvinyl Records will be releasing a split EP featuring Into It. Over It. and Owen on August 21. Although the gold/clear "early bird" pressing of the 7" sold out within days of becoming available, the EP is still available for pre-order in standard vinyl and MP3 formats from Polyvinyl's website.

Both artists contributed one original song to the release as well as a cover of one song by the other artist. Weiss' new track "Local Language"--described as "an uptempo tune with a vaguely alt-country stomp"--is accompanied by a rendition of Kinsella's "Poor Souls" incorporating unorthodox timbral flavours that will be familiar to fans of Into It. Over It.'s sophomore album Intersections. Kinsella, meanwhile, continues to embrace the fleshed-out sound of Owen's full band (i.e. him playing all the instruments) on "Poison Arrows" before closing the record with a surprising twist as the 38-year-old father of two gets back to his long-abandoned punk rock roots with his completely fresh take on Into It. Over It.'s solo acoustic piece "Anchor". While furious, distorted chords and fast, intent drumming propel the song forward, Kinsella delivers his most energetic vocal performance in years (perhaps of his entire career, in fact), so much so that he is almost unrecognisable as the same gentle singer that emo fans have come to regard as an icon in the genre.

Weiss and his full band line-up for Into It. Over It. recently completed a two-year long series of international tours for the album Intersections and have just headed into the studio to record the project's third full-length, with much of the album having been written back in January by Weiss and drummer Josh Sparks during a month of isolation in a Vermont cabin. Kinsella released an eight-song album of covers late last year entitled Other People's Songs before continuing the reunion tour for his highly influential college band American Football, who have completed a run of dates across the US, UK and an appearance at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona. American Football will hit Japan at the end of June before traveling through Australia, the UK (again), and finally, the Fun Fun Fun Festival in Texas.

I remember Mike playing "Poison Arrows" when I saw him last month. I figured it was just a cover song.
