Dean Blunt's Free Jazz

2014-04-18 by MisterTornado | 22 Comments
At the beginning of April Dean Blunt and a group of musicians - including three saxophonists (Bradley Miller, Asger Hartvig, Shabaka Hutchins), two guitarists (Blunt, Joanna Robertson), a bass player (Emil Elg), a vocalist (Liquid Thompson), and three pianists (Blunt, Robertson, Elg) - came together in London's Cafe Oto for a show they called "Free Jazz". At just under an hour the octet trespassed through a simultaneously elusive and ghastly set of unhinged improvised Jazz. The performance has since been uploaded to Blunt's soundcloud page and can be heard below.

tryna' feed my family

not a massive fan of Jazz like this - i gave this a listen the other day but it was just a little too
TENSE and sproratic for Phlegm. definitely got more love for the more subdued use of brass, like that
little segment leading up to the middle of Skin Fade - YESS

I feel ya Phleg, I love those quiet parts too. Joanna Robertson's folk strumming is heartwarming. I think it's really interesting to see Blunt explore these areas, however difficult and challenging it is. He seems to be always pushing himself in new directions. So pumped whenever Black Metal drops.

That is kinda the point of free jazz, tense sporadic jazz with absolutely no sense of rythm

I wouldn't say there's absolutely no sense of rythm, its just broken down and fractured to a point that's unrecognizable. However, there's hints of rhythm everywhere. Most good Free Jazz manages to capture broken rhythms and melodies that you can follow to keep yourself afloat amidst the choas.

It's almost cinematic. The way it falls down at 29 minutes and the harshness fades to this gentle accent of Thomson's spoken word reminds me alot of Matana Roberts' Mississippi Moonchile.

The problem imo is that none of the instruments go in sync, on one hand it reminds me of the hustle and bustle of a big city, on the other, it comes off as concerningly shaggs-like.

That's the nature of Free Jazz, take it or leave it. Although there's plenty of synchronizing happening as the track slows down around 34 minutes.
