New Sepultura album in 2013

2013-06-05 by DragonHeartstring | 19 Comments
Brazilian thrash band Sepultura, notorious for albums such as Arise and Beneath The Remains, have announced that they intend to release a new studio album in 2013 at some point. It has now been 2 year since the release of their previous album, Kairos, in 2011, and fans may be anxious to hear how they follow-up the first praised album the band has released in years.

The band stated on the subject that "We hope to have it released around the end of October/November on Nuclear Blast" and also mentioned “We have written most of the music already and now we are working on lyrics for the album".

Notorious? Anyway known about this for a while. Think it's interesting how Soulfly and Sepultura have both ended up on similar paths (with Soulfly oddly going for the more extreme genre), both going back to their old groove filled thrash sound and hiring drummers that are young enough to be their kids (well Soulfly's new drummer IS Max's kid). And they're both on Nuclear Blast now.

Also both are gonna have albums out by the end of the year. Soulfly wrapped their recording sessions up a few weeks ago.

I think I'm actually going to bother with the new Soulfly because they seem to be changing their sound up a bit (at fucking last). It's near impossible to get excited about a new Sepultura record, though.

Don't Soulfly change their sound slightly every few albums anyway?
S/T - Tribal metal, slightly more nu metal continuation of Roots
Primitive - full on nu metal with tribal elements
3 - nu metal with odd flashes of groove
Prophecy - lighter groove
Dark Ages - groove/thrash
Conquer to Omen - groove (lineup change after Omen cos Max thought after two albums the band were getting too comfortable and stale with their sound)
Enslaved - groove/death

Anyway, Sepultura. Kairos had some OK tunes so there is some hope, plus Eloy Casagrande is a really good drummer so it'll be interesting to see what he can bring to the table.

@DatsNotDaMetulz
labels will be labels but Soulfly's career is rather exclusively made up of albums that have: 1. deep grooves 2. tribal elements 3. thrashier pace-changing sections. Of course minor adjustments are always being made and dynamics are changed, but the genesis of their sound has always been the same. The new-found death metal influence is what intrigues me. If Max can successfully merge it with his signature groove/thrash sound, something cool might come out of it.

Enslaved was one of my albums of 2012 so if they can top that I'll be happy. Dunno if they'll stick to
the death metal stuff though cos by writing stuff with Greg Puciato and co for Nailbomb 2 Max may be
in a punkier state of mind, combined with the fact Zyon is now drumming for them and he's full time in
Lody Kong who are a slightly metallic but mostly grunge/hardcore band (example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kByHmXHrNRo). But he can play their old stuff capably and growing up
being taught by Roy Mayorga, Iggor Snr and Bill Ward probably means he's more than capable of it.

As long as it's not "just another Soulfly album" like Conquer most glaringly was, I'm willing to give it a spin.

The problem with Conquer was that all the good stuff from that year (aside from Blood Fire War Hate and Unleash) was taken from Soulfly and used for Cavalera Conspiracy (I remember seeing an article from 2007 about Inflikted being released by Max as a Soulfly demo before CavCon came into being).

Derrick Green just isn't a good vocalist imo.

If you don't think Dante was a fucking killer record you must be deaf.

I hate Max Cavalera's voice, I much prefer Derrick Green. Stopped listening to Soulfly after Conquer, i thought it all got a bit disappointing then.
I think Dante was one of my all time favourite albums, Kairos was really good too. I think this will be a good album. Go Sep!

Kairos was actually pretty solid, so hopefully this one will be okay, not too bothered though. It
won't be as good as the last Soulfly album.
