Details on New Mastodon

2013-02-13 by DirtBagDan | 78 Comments
Coming off the back of The Hunter, famous prog-metal band Mastodon have now decided to take their experimental nature even further by incorporating what guitarist-singer Brent Hinds refers to as "Radioheadish" influences. The new album is set to be recorded shortly with a 2014 release becoming more and more of a reality. The sound of the new album has been described by Hinds as "very spooky" due to the use of slide guitar and open G tunings to create a Radiohead-sounding atmosphere.

Dammit, I was hoping they'd take their new sound and start throwing in some stuff they covered in the past as early as Remission. I have no clue what to think of this

Crack The Skye and The Hunter were complete dog shit, save for the track "Oblivion".

After Crack The Skye was released I knew I could never have faith in another Mastodon album going forward. I wont be dissapointed at all if the new one is a stinker again.

@bigguy
What? I personally thought Crack The Skye was their best since Leviathan, "The Last Baron" kicked ass. I didn't like The Hunter all
that much though.

Going to have to agree with halloway on this one. Bands gotta evolve, otherwise we're hearing the same shit on a different day.

There is a difference between ripping off and being influenced. You haven't heard a millisecond of the album so you don't even know what it will sound like.

Crack the Skye was their best in my opinion, with Blood Mountain and Leviathan tied for second. The Hunter was more accessible but it still had a lot of great songs like the title track which features my all time favorite guitar solo of Brent Hinds.
