Jacob Bannon short film stream

2013-01-30 by Voivod STAFF | 58 Comments
McFarland and Pecci film productions have aired a short film about Converge vocalist Jacob Bannon, at the following location:

http://vimeo.com/55406846

Clocking in at approximately 12 minutes, the documentary captures Bannon's acute appeal about his life and art and how both became virtually inseparable in the process.

In his own words:

I'm Jacob Bannon, about 35 years old. And I'm still motivated. And I'm still angry. And I'm still trying to shake things up.

Pretty cool. They should have put shots of him actually talking in there instead of just looking all emo the whole
time, though.

Cool guy, any fan of Converge should see this.

Yeah I mean, it's a cool watch and all. Some of the shots are great. He "seems like a nice guy" because he IS a nice guy. But when I saw him live just a few months ago, he showed so much more personality than he did at any point in this film.

And his lyrics at this point honestly tell more than he did on the video at all. It sort of seemed like a shallow analysis of him told through some faux dramatic lenses. IDK, this was a cool watch I just really feel like they could've done so much more with it.

I agree, I didn't learn as much about him as I thought, and hoped, I would.

But I enjoyed it, there are some aspects about him that I did not know and now I do thanks to this, plus it was a beautiful film to watch, the direction was excellent, all shots were crystal clear.

"I don't wanna create anymore damage in this world. The world's already suicidal. Literally, constantly, this earth is trying to purge human beings off it every day. I just want to give back... in what weird ways I can." - Jacob Bannon

This short film obviously doesn't tell the whole story, doesn't sound like he feels like deserves to or wants to. It's already portrayed deeply in his music, lyrics, and artwork; that, any true Converge fan already knows. No one will ever truely know the full story of anyone, we only give out what we can and are willing without giving away ourselves completely. Because what is truly ours, is ours to keep till the end, we throw what we know is true into the unkown.

@gwyn - yeah it's definitely a well done thing and it explores a few aspects that I didn't know before. But I just seriously feel so strongly that they could've gotten much more out of him and they kind of failed in doing so.

@TMobotron: Didn't you happen to think that maybe what he told was what he wanted to tell. Are you a book?, can I just read you completely and say what I want to say about you or anyone else without seeing the real truth of what happened to you and how it made you feel. Isn't that what matters? The way anything that happens that effects you as a person in life can only be true to you. Some things are up for discussion but it all comes down to you. There are obviously some things he probably wanted to leave for himself. Think about Jane Doe for example, does it sound like something he's willing to put out there for everyone to see? He put it into his lyrics and that's what he was willing to give out to everyone. The true story is his to keep and to give out to whomever he wants. What makes life special is what lies personal and special to being an individual and what makes you a person and what stands out to you in your life.

Yeah I get what you're saying, but isn't everything he puts out in his lyrics something he wants to share with other people at least in some way?

I'd think so, and really my point is that a lot of the topics he covers, specifically on AWLWLB (specifically referring to this album because it's so recent and probably reflects his current state best), go waaaayyy deeper than anything he stated in the video. I mean there's a ton of emotional depth that he's told us through a lot of his songs, and yet when the maker of this video really got a chance to sit down with him and try to understand those situations, he/she failed to do so.

I think it's obvious from some of his lyrics that there are plenty of stories he DOES want to tell that didn't get touched on in the vid.

I dunno, if I remember correctly he didn't even mention Converge once (by name at least). I think the video had a specific area of focus that he stuck to. Almost like a day in the life of Jacob Bannon kinda thing.

I don't think he mentioned converge by name either, but he definitely spoke at least briefly about being a front-man, and it certainly had to be on his mind in the interview.

And dude, a day in the life of JB would've been great too, but I still stand by the same point. I just think he's a deep enough guy that the director or whoever could've gotten more out of him.

And I mean maybe not. I want to re-iterate that I really liked the video. But I do think that it has some short-comings.

Fair enough, I do agree that I was hoping to learn more about him from the film but as I say, I don't think that was necessarily the focus. Regardless, we can just agree to (somewhat) disagree.

And Converge are fucking awesome so we can just agree on that!

Maybe your right @TMobotron, but I also would consider the fact that the things he didn't tell he portrayed best through his lyrics and he wants to leave it at that for people to decipher and giving meaning to for themselves. Because he puts alot of heart into his lyrics. Truth and what really happened and what it means to him he might leave for himself. The true meaning of life, what the things that happened to us meant, and what means to us most is what comes through when we die.

wacknizzle

That's pretty much all that's left when we die, our soul, what we went through, what remains true for us. Not to sound like a Converge fanboy but All We Love We Leave Behind. We are what we are deep down when we pass through.

SAPoodle have you seen them live?

When I saw them, JB just seemed like such an outwardly good dude, even though he was breaking into some brutally heavy songs. I kind of just assumed from his live act that he'd be able to really delve into seem deep topics even with a camera in front of him.

Haha and shit foxxxy I don't know! It must've gotten deleted, not sure why though. But I really wanted to respond because you called me out for trashing aubergine's use of the word "tool" as if it was clever when I made the point that Tool fans wear merch that calls them what they are (at least I think it was you that called me out). And I know it's a point that's been made countless times already. Anyway, I wanted to point out that I realized I wasn't being clever by making that point, I was really just adding my thought to the mix because I've always strongly agreed with it.

TMobotron, I unfortunately haven't had the privilege of seeing them live. I'm from South Africa so I'm a long way away from anywhere they'd be likely to play. I'm saving up for a trip at the end of this year though to see them in the US/Europe hopefully.

nailed it

where in SA are you from? I lived near Cape Town for 5 weeks last January-Feb (wow that was a year ago....time flies). I saw ONE SHOW! but it was awesome, The Tallest Man on Earth played his first gig since being in the studio for 6 months straight. So we were the first crowd on Earth to hear some of the stuff from the most recent LP. But yeah not many great bands come all the way down there...

Thanks MrElmo, seeing Converge at Hellfest would slay.

Aids, I'm from Durban so we get even less gigs than Cape Town or Johannesburg. Lately we've had some pretty sick bands around but all of them rooted in the mainstream. Chili Peppers are here now and that's pretty cool but man, I need to see Opeth or Sigur Ros or something cos it's bleak seeing everyone on here deciding whether or not to see Godspeed for the 6th or 7th time.

Either this was filmed before his dog died and it took that long to edit and release it, or he has two dogs and this is the dog that's still alive.

if you don't feel he opened up enough maybe it's because he didn't feel comfortable doing so. he even said in the video that he started on drums and changed to vocals. he said he never wanted to be the frontman and main focus like the vocalists usually are. he probably feels more comfortable revealing things in his lyrics because he's not physically speaking to others. he's just a shy dude i think.

Agree that his never talking on-camera is a bit cheesy. The whole thing was really cheesy with the lack of on-camera speaking, and sentimental background music. That aside, he had a lot of cool things to say, and getting to see him paint and record in the studio were interesting. Dat Jane Doe art.
