Bill Doss dies at 44

2012-07-31 by breakingthefragile | 33 Comments
Bill Doss, known mostly as the song-writer, guitarist, and vocalist behind indie rock band
The Olivia Tremor Control was announced dead at 44 years of age. The Olivia Tremor Control
confirmed the unfortunate news on their official website earlier today. Doss was also the
co-founder of The Elephant 6 Recording Company collective, and was closely involved with
working on the albums of collective-comrades "The Apples in Stereo". An official statement
on the cause of death has not been issued as of yet.

Nooooo! I heard he was sick for a while but I wasn't expecting this. Hopefully there will still be a new OTC album.. Thank you for your amazing work on Black Foliage: Animation Music and Dusk At Cubist Castle. R.I.P. bro

Wow. That's very unfortunate. I really enjoyed Dusk at Cubist Castle.

I'm really torn up about this, I adore pretty much everything he was involved in. I was actually lucky enough to get a chance to meet him once at an Apples in Stereo show. He's a really cool guy in person, it's terrible that he's gone.

@Nick and my cred thanks me for it. But really, it was a fun album to listen to. Sucks that he's dead.

Oh, this is unfortunate. I'm huge fan of The Olivia Tremor Control, as well as the other bands that formed after their break-up. These musicians never got the attention they truly deserved, certainly one of the greatest psychedelic artists of all time. RIP.

It's unfortunate to see him go so soon, especially since he was so happy to be writing with OTC again. It was an awesome time when I discovered the Elephant 6 record label. So many great projects came out of that group that included Bill. OTC opened up my mind up to the amazing possibilities there are recording music, Black Foliage is absolutely surreal.

Still kind of can't believe this. Glad I got to see them in April. Terrific performer.

@nash1311 If you like lo-fi or psychedelic indie rock, I definitely recommend both The Olivia Tremor Control and The Apples in Stereo. This guy used to work with Jeff Mangum from Neutral Milk Hotel after all, and I'm sure you've heard of that band if you have an account on this site lol. The entire Elephant 6 collective is essential if you're into that genre or scene at all though.

Black Foliage: Animation Music is probably the best album to start with or for anyone who didn't like DACC, it's more solid than that album overall.
