Earl Sweatshirt returns?

2012-02-07 by dimsim3478 | 99 Comments
After over a year of speculation, the soon-to-be eighteen year old music prodigy Earl Sweatshirt, member of the acclaimed hip hop collective OFWGKTA, is said to be returning to Los Angeles after his time at the Coral Reef Academy, where its program "[helps] troubled youths [to] overcome emotional difficulties and substance abuse".

A report from Alternative Intervention Models, an organisation dedicated to the artistic and personal development of "at-risk" youths in order to counter their questionable lifestyles, indicates that they had sent nine of their students, specifically aspiring hip-hop artists, to Coral Reef Academy to meet with Earl Sweatshirt and share their common interest. The report also notes that, during his absence from OFWKGTA, Earl has "been busy sharpening and collaborating in virtually the same way as other AIM rappers". A watermarked photo of Earl and the students accompanies the article.

A direct excerpt from the AIM article reads that Earl "is on his way back home to Los Angeles where he will finish high school before launching the next phase of his widely anticipated rap career -- under the wizened guidance of Leila Steinberg, artistic mentor who famously first guided music and screen icon, Tupac Shakur."

Earl's return in February was previously denied by OFWGKTA leader Tyler, the Creator, as well as non-musical group member Lionel "L-Boy" Boyce, who served as spokesperson on the group's latest press release (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gmAlE9G4ZU). Tyler had posted the following earlier this year via his Twitter account (#fucktyler):

"I Miss Thebe Son. Its Not Fair Yo, Its Just Not. Niggas Bout To Hit Another Tour With Out Him…And He’s Not Home In Feb. Stop Believing Everything."

The full AIM article can be viewed here:
http://www.alternativeinterventionmodels.org/index2.html

Update: Though Tyler had originally hoped for Earl's material to be included on The Odd Future Tape Vol. 2 (unspecified as to whether it was previously recorded work or new), he has now confirmed on Twitter that none will appear on the tape.

Oh so because their rap isn't about making money and getting bitches, it must be a joke?
They turned rap into a more creative and unique entity. They pushed limits.
Don't be pissed because your narrow minded. Fucking idiot.

Not sure I'd call him a "prodigy". He's hardly the first teenage rapper. He is pretty talented though, I liked EARL more than any other Odd Future release so far.

I'm not sure what the big deal is though. He's a drug using teenage kid who got sent to a court ordered rehab. Join the club. Dude will be smoking blunts and drinkin 40s 2 weeks after he's out.

I really really hope this is true. It kind of bugs me when people try to distance themselves from OF's obnoxious fanbase/be contrarian by saying how much OF sucks and then they're like, "OH EXCEPT EARL, CAN'T WAIT FOR HIM TO COME BACK AND KICK ODD FUTURE'S ASS." EARL is pretty good but a few of the tracks are so lackluster. Defs the most overrated member of OF.

anyway, I still love him and I hope this is true because that'd be absolutely amazing. Not getting hopes up, tho.

I also hope he starts doing drugs again tho because yeah.

also, they're doing all this "maturation" and "like Tupac Shakur" and "artistic" blahblahblah. I hope
they didn't try to craft him into some "revolutionary" rapper who'd try doing dumbass conscious stuff.
If this is true of course.

gabethepiratesquid

I mean is it really an opinion? Like is it really one's OPINION that no one ever actually landed on the moon or that 9/11 was an inside job or is that just kind of being ridiculous? Saying "I think Earl is better than Tyler" is an opinion but being like "Tyler doesn't actually want Earl back because he knows he'd be outshine and Earl would be the more popular one" is just really odd because they're best friends and Tyler honestly is going to quit rapping (at least for a while) after WOLF and even if Earl WAS objectively better than Tyler (which I don't think he is), Tyler got the huge boost of fame because of his own shit and the Yonkers video. The chances of "if Earl was still here, his EARL video would have gotten like 50 million view on Youtube" or Earl Sweatshirt would've had ANOTHER thing to garner that attention is just dumb.

I mean I don't honestly care that it's andcas saying this and I'm not saying he's personally dumb and I'm sure he's a great guy I disagree with when it comes to music but it feels like you didn't think very much behind saying that.
