it's pretty bad

i honestly think kevin barnes has a good ear for melody and this shows it but every good idea is drowned out before it can begin to latch on, and the "experimental" bullshit sounds diluted and weak and generally masturbatory

i was on the same page as you initially alex but i dk this is probs my favorite now in his post-sunlandic twins phase. i guess i've accepted that he's never going to make satanic panic again and just embrace the weirdness. even though that exorcismisc song is fucking terrible, the last song is awesome

On my first listen, there's some interesting stuff here. I'm surprised some people have already decided to hate this, it's layered enough (and weird enough) that a few listens won't cut it.

it's not that i hate this, but from the ones i've heard, i was never into 'of montreal' enough to enjoy their lps in their entireties (excepting sunlandic twins). so i guess this just falls into the back end of their discography for me. maybe my opinion will change, but for now, wellyea.

also, totally looking forward to a hyperbolic review from mr tao here if he's got one lying around.

in fact aside from hissing fauna i haven't liked a lot of their stuff since the gay parade

i didnt mind false priest but i hated skeletal lamping. satanic panic was the first of montreal record i heard so i have a soft spot for it. i generally like their twee stuff better than this georgie fruit business

Satanic Panic is where it's at, but their newest album is immensely enjoyable.

they could have been great if they managed to make their sound a little bit more concrete and focus at the better melodies which are fleeting in most of their albums

still, I guess their works are portrayals of Barnes' half-fucked up mind so I cannot accuse them!!

I really want to see a review of this one though

If Of Montreal's music was a person it would be a flaming gay man.

but yeah this is meh. They keep disappointing me which is sad cuz I loved Satanic Panic + Sunlandic + Hissing Fauna.

Yeah guys, your brains are obviously too STUPID to handle how experimental this music is. Maybe if your mind could COMPREHEND how avant-garde it really is then you would appreciate it, DERP.

How so? I never said anything negative about anyone who doesn't like this, nor did I say they're stupid for not liking it. Those are assumptions you made on your own for whatever reason. I just stated that people on this site don't tend to like unconventional music. If you get offended by that, I don't know what to say to you.

Anthracks

I don't care if nobody else likes this. I actually prefer to be the only one to like something so by all means dislike as you see fit. Get over yourself while you're at it.

"I just stated that people on this site don't tend to like unconventional music." and thus we don't like this? no, i say nay, especially when your citations of 'unconventional music' are, uhh, radiohead and panda bear? w/e i'm probably Being Trolled

Anthracks

my citations from your personal ratings. i would not say those are exemplary choices for unconventionality. you think TKOL is conventional? I did not say radiohead is unconventional (way to misquote me), I said TKOL is

robertsona

wow okay you are actually being serious? yes, you're right, i don't like this album because i dont like unconventional music. this is proven in my dislike of two (2) other "unconventional" (and yes, i maintain that both tkol and tomboy, especially the latter, are pretty far from being paragons of unconventionality) albums, out of a whopping 19 albums i've rated. thats how statistics work. what about the fact that easily the most unconventional album in my ratings (the caretaker, but you probably wouldn't know about that album because you dont like unconventional music lol owned) i gave a 4.5? come on

Anthracks

you didn't answer my question. you think TKOL is conventional? and I didn't look past your most recent ratings, narcissist I don't care that much

robertsona

sure uh tkol is not conventional. i wouldnt say its wildly unconventional but if you want to say it is unconventional overall then sure. that said its not like that matters, what matters is that you think you can give a survey of my tastes and whether or not they are "conventional" from two ratings

Anthracks
