Sonic Youth Announce Separation

2011-10-15 by Prince1993 | 96 Comments
Sonic Youth super-couple Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore have split up after 27 years of marriage and the future of the band they've played in together since 1981 is unclear.

"Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment," the rep said.

band hasn't been relevant for awhile? Excuse me? Sonic Youth will always be relevant. Just because you're replacing your tampons with your ratshit techno and fag rock, doesn't make Sonic Youth less relevant to the music industry. douche.

Jack and Meg White split years ago, doesn't change anything about the music. Sonic Youth will not be breaking up because of this. Who knows, maybe they'll enter a 4th decade with a 4th transition. They rarely disappoint.

Saying Sonic Youth "isn't relevant" proves your ignorance to music. That's like saying 'The Cure isn't relevant" or "The Beatles aren't relevant." It's a pathetic statement, plus it undermines the second half of your post.

The Eternal was released in 2009. They're still actively touring. They've influenced bands like No Age, Deerhunter, and most of the lo fi, shoegaze, noise rock genres.

Saying that Eve 6 hasn't been relevant for some time would be an accurate statement, but a band still touring and producing albums, EPs, soundtracks, etc as being irrelevant, and influencing 50% of the genres people purchase these days, is an ignorant statement.

Yeah good call, that's probably a bit of an overstatement. Maybe more like 15% now that I think about it. Still, they're relevant.

and some could consider "helter skelter" the birth of modern metal. I don't quite agree but it's been said. By some asshole.

Well that's a subjective answer. As a fan of Sonic Youth I'd say 2009. The Eternal had some great songs on it - Antenna was one of their best of their career imo. A few songs were below their standards but at least 75% of the album was good.

Rather Ripped was solid, Incinerate is a great track, Do You Believe in Rapture, great track. Sonic Nurse is the last album Pitchfork awarded a BNM to, but RR appeared on their top 50 of 2006 I think. Some may say Murray Street which was 2002. The only time the band has faltered was late 90s/early 00s. Not much going on from 96-2001.

But Goo? Sister? Even Washing Machine? Underrated.

their last few albums have been quite good in that predictable latter era SY kind of way, they've become too comfortable and homogenous with their sound but still

because this is sonic youth and there's more discussion about their influence and "importance" than the actual music it seems like a lot of people just blanket-dismiss their recent output because the general rock critic perception is that they no longer have their finger on the pulse of indie rock or whatever. forming your own opinions is too much work

Ah. It's an interesting match-up tomorrow between the Lions and Niners. You think the Lions will remain undefeated? I for one think SF's blowout last week against TB was a fluke. They're good, but they're not that good. I do think Alex Smith will surprise some people though. Detroit on the other hand are a scary team. I'm a die-hard Packers fan, always have been, and that Detroit Lions team makes me nervous.
