Syd Barrett Statue

2006-10-04 by Patrick | 16 Comments
Late Pink Floyd frontman Syd Barrett will be honored in his hometown of Cambridge, England with a statue.
The psychedelic rock legend died at age 60 in Cambridge in July following complications relating to diabetes.
Barrett had been a recluse since leaving the band in 1968 after suffering an LSD-induced breakdown.
His family has given a local campaign their blessing to erect a statue in the city, if council officials approve it.

I'd raise a statue of Syd in my yard for sure.

RIP

He was early Pink Floyd frontman, not late. I dont really know why you would honour someone that took drugs for a few years, everyday. But he was a very cool and i hope he RIP.

This is good news. :thumb:
But would the statue be of an early Syd, detuning his guitar with mandies flowing down his face? Or kind of creepy old and obese Syd?

Because he started Pink floyd.
If it took drugs to do that so be it.

Nobody has really given a toss for years, his solo works never sold well.

The statue should be in some music critics garden

Late usually implies the person is dead. He would be honored for highly influencing psychedelic music, not his substance abuse.

Yeah, considering he basically was responsible for Pink Floyd's early success that helped them even get to the level of such albums as Meddle and Animals, Syd Barrett is probably the most important member of the band.

Not to mention, that most of Floyd's early stuff is just completely flawless, in comparsion to their latter material which suffers from overblown incomprehensible pretention.

Saying that all Barrett did was "take drugs", proves how stupid half the members of this site are. He was basically the poster child of the psychadelic scene in Britian and helped really spear that underground music into the mainstream through the catalyst of Pink Floyd.

Even if he did jack shit, he's dead and should at least have some respect for him. He's done a hell of alot more than just sit on a computer and babble about shit he knows nothing about.

that's pretty neat, i don't know of any other rock stars with their own statues (unless they were really conceited and had one made for them)

Beautiful. Another reason I would want to take a trip to England.
Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy singer and bass player) has a statue in Ireland.

Whereabouts in Cambridge any idea?

Syd was definitely an amazing musician and artist...He should be honoured, if not for his survival through a mental illness, then for his immense contribution to music, and one of the greatest bands to exist.
