This Darkened Heart was really average. TFOI has an awesome second half (minus one song). It's the chorus-filled first half that bothers me.

TFOI has some great songs on it but they're sporadic. I think as an entire album TDH is a lot better.

Indictment is like one of the best songs they've ever done too.

Whispers (I Hear You) has the one biggest thing that bothers me about a lot of this metalcore stuff… the chorus doesn't fit the rest of the song at all, it's a complete change just so they can cram the chorus in.

The clean chorus is more or less what this style of metalcore focuses on.

The song sounds a little like "Two Weeks" but that wasn't necessarily a bad song IMO. I still don't know why everybody is bitching. The song sounds good. No screaming/shouting vocals does not automatically mean a bad song/album.

This was meh. At least they cleaned up the production. And from the title track we know that Phil's back to showing off his excellent screaming range. So I guess my hope for this album isn't completely gone.

Seriously what the fuck is this? Holy shit that chorus might be the worst I have ever heard from any
metalcore band ever. Lyrically it sounds like generic garbage from Three Days Grace or some other
radio rock crap and could the production on the vocals be any more obvious? And aside from that okay
solo, the instrumentation was completely uninteresting.

The most frustrating part about this is that you know they can be good. The Fall of Ideals was only
released four years ago. I can't even contemplate how a band can go from making an album of that
caliber to making this piece of shit after only a few years.

90% of the comments i read were negative with no good reasons. im disappointed at how simple minded the metalcore community has become. if the vocalist isnt screaming at least 75% of the time, the song almost instantly is labeled as garbage. learn to appreciate a great band's evolution or get off the band wagon

I like the new song cause I got into ATR with Two Weeks.... and I tend to listen more to songs that aren't screaming nonstop.... I hope the album is split in half between clean and scream that way everyone can be happy :D

oh and Phil proves time and time again that he is an awesome vocalist. Everyone of their albums he has improved and always been trying to change it up. True ATR fans will respect that. Myself and I'm sure a few others like to represent the fact that we've been listening to these guys for a long time and like to show that by hating on change but..look at it for what it is; a great band that can change it up but still fucking rock.

This is probably the album's "Two Weeks". Which is okay with me, I think they have pretty solid pop sensibilities. I doubt the rest of the album will be like this. Just a little slice of accessible, melodic rock for those who like that side of them.

Then again, I get the feeling lots of people here don't appreciate that side of them.... Oh well. Maybe it's best I wasn't introduced to them with their "best album" first. My perception of them is different.

It's just sad that they abandoned screaming. Phil had one of my favorite screams in metalcore. So diverse. So brutal. And he just doesn't have a very good singing voice. I had hoped they would return to their roots after Overcome was generally hailed as a better beer coaster than album, but I was wrong. The music is less energetic, less creative. The music gets a 3 at most, the vocals get a 1.5. No good.

Well, no not completely. But the ratio is definitely swinging toward the 80-90% singing. Especially in the single category. I remember This Darkened Heart had 95% screaming, fell in love. Fall of Ideals is about as much as they should have because they can tear down the walls. But this new trend has them nipping at 18V's and A7X's heels. Frankly, I hope I'm wrong. I hope it's just a case of the shitty single. We'll see.

Every fucking ATR albums are all fucking amazing. Hold On is so deep song, amazing break up song. I think one love song will not kill ATR at all.

Cutman- Two Weeks was actually good. This is shit. And I don't think they're going to cut out screaming entirely (as evidenced by their other single), but it definitely seems like they're going more towards a radio friendly sound which no doubt means they're going to scream less.

LOL Its labelled as garbage because when he isn't screaming he is doing really bad singing. Phil has a fair range when it comes to screaming but he chooses to sing (badly) and to me it just kills the song.
Even from an instrument point of view it doesn't sound very interesting. Sounds like a leftover from "Overcome".

a) it's recycled riffing, repeated aimlessly
b) it's uninspired, with zero emotion.
c) he sounds like he is mentally challenged when he sings I think he has a damn fine harsh
vocal range. So I'm not sure why he isn't utilizing it.
d) it far surpasses the depths of generic. It sounds like everyone else and these guys aren't
one of the best bands out there mind you, they don't even pull generic off properly.

Worse than almost everything from "Overcome" and that is saying a lot. It sounds like Ozzy Osbournes newer radio metal. This is now "Pop Metal" for sure. I don't understand how they can go from "TFOI" to thiiiiiiis.

I'm all for bands trying new things, but these guys have lost any integrity they had left.

It's not that they don't scream now. It's that Phil was incredible at screaming, and his singing voice is lackluster and uninspiring at best. He had phenomenal screams, range almost no one could match. His singing voice just doesn't measure up. The the riffing is very straight forward. And it's lost it's power. Metal is supposed to have some balls, screaming or not, and this is just castrated ATR. And it isn't like they grew hugely as artists. For example, Thrice (no, not metal, but bear with me for 2 seconds before you put my head on a proverbial spike) was heavier than they are now. I was quite disappointed to find out they changed their musical stylings, because I was in love at the time with Illusions of Safety, but they grew as a band and became more mature, and excelled at what they created. ATR hasn't grown with these last 2 albums, they seem to digress into a pattern that many bands have done and redone before them.
