Jimmy Page Being Sued

2010-06-30 by East Hastings | 66 Comments
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page is being sued by Jake Holmes, an American folk singer, due to claims that he originally wrote and recorded the song "Dazed and Confused".

Holmes stated that Page infringed his copyright, because his version of the song was released two years before Led Zeppelin’s. However, even if Holmes wins the suit, he can only claim money owed during the past three years, due to the statute of limitations.

Holmes recorded his version of the song in 1967 for his debut album “The Above Ground Sound” Of Jake Holmes. The album wasn’t exactly a huge hit, but later that year, Holmes played a gig with The Yardbirds, whom Page was a part of, at the Village Theater in Greenwich Village, New York. The band were impressed with the song and decided to develop their own version, a much longer one, with Page using a violin bow on his guitar.

Despite the fact that The Yardbirds never recorded a studio version of this song, there are a few live recordings in existence. One performance from a French TV show in March 1968 actually gives Holmes songwriting credits. By the time Zeppelin recorded their version of the song, Page had changed the music and lyrics of the song so much that he was credited as the sole writer. Holmes did try to contact Page, but with no luck. However, he always refused to take legal action – until now.

In terms of royalties, Holmes just wants “a fair deal. I don’t want [Page] to give me full credit for this song. He took it and put it in a direction that I would never have taken it, and it became very successful. So why should I complain? But give me at least half-credit on it”.

Here is the article, complete with an interview with Jake Holmes, and a comparison of both artists' versions of "Dazed and Confused":

Was just about to post this. Not terribly surprising seeing as how they're known for ripping off blues artists. Still, it's Led Zeppelin.

but shit, if Led Zeppelin re-mixed one of my songs, I'd like everyone to know lol..even if it was like 50 years later

Yeah, that was pretty obvious, so just give the man his credit and let's move on. It's not like anyone's going to stop listening to Zeppelin's version if they do.

If true, take em for all the money you can.
a) Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page haven't been relevant for years and years.
b) Everyone wants a payday, they got theirs when they used the song. Nows your turn no-name guy.

They ripped off a lot of blues, folk, pop and psychedelic bands from decades before and even from that
era.

Listen to the band Spirit, the band Zeppelin opened for on their first tours.

Led Zeppelin aren't blues, folk, pop, or psychedelic. And I don't see the similarity to Spirit either. Even if they did steal quite a bit of stuff, they at least translated it into their own sound, so they're not completely unoriginal. They should definitely have given credit to the original artists though.

"Led Zeppelin aren't blues, folk, pop, or psychedelic."

LOL WUT?

The Battle of Evermore - Folk
Since I've Been Loving You - Blues

Wikipedia's Characteristics of Psychedelic rock;

1. electric guitars, often used with feedback, wah wah and fuzzboxes
2. elaborate studio effects, such as backwards tapes, panning, phasing, long delay loops, and
extreme reverb
3. exotic instrumentation, with a particular fondness for the sitar and tabla
4. a strong keyboard presence, especially organs, harpsichords, or the Mellotron (an early tape-
driven 'sampler')
5. a strong emphasis on extended instrumental solos or jams
6. more complex song structures, key and time signature changes, modal melodies and drones
7. surreal, whimsical, esoterically or literary-inspired, lyrics.

1 - Yeah, have you heard this band?
2 - Stairway to Heaven is supposedly a satan worship in reverse lol.
3 - So what if they don't use a fucking Sitar
4 - Into to Trampled Under Foot
5 - The live 20 min. versions of Moby Dick, Whole Lotta Love, and Dazed and Confused on How The West
Was Won.
6 - The intro of The Ocean switches between 2 measures of 4/4 and 1 of 7/4
7 - The Battle of Evermore is about Lord of the Rings.

Lets try to at least have SOME ounce of evidence to back up your absurd statements.

In other news the guy shouldn't have waited 42 years to press charges lol, even if it was
plagiarized.

Sometimes Led Zeppelin genre crosses but they generally maintain a rock sound. Now that I think about it though, there's a decent amount of blues influence in some of their songs.
