While getting their musical education at punk staples like The Gilman Project, Green Day released two wildy popular underground LP's, 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours (the only album with drummer John Kiftenmeyer) and Kerplunk (The first album with Tre Cool.) After the success of these two LP's, Record Companies were chomping at the bit to sign these guys. They eventually signed with Reprise Records, shunning their Gilman Street fanbase to go bigtime.
Riding the commercial pop appeal of such classics as "Longview" and "Basket Case", their major record debut, Dookie, changed the face of music. Bands were now looking for that charm and laziness Green Day enabled in their music. Their followup, Insomniac, was even more critically acclaimed, and Green Day was literally on top of the world. The 1997 release of Nimrod saw Green Day going in a more poppy direction, with songs like the teen classic "Good Riddance". The poppyness only grew to a higher level with 2000's Warning. With Warning, it felt as though Green Day lost their punk. They were men now, and how could they pretend to hate their parents when they are parents themselves??
After Warning's release, it appeared Green Day fell off the face of the earth. But the triumphant reinvention of the band, 2004's American Idiot put them right smack in the mainstream again, only this time to a higher level than ever before. Their political views finally came across in neon lights on American Idiot, much to the chagrin of the fans of their masturbation anthems. Green Day released Bullet In A Bible, a concert film/documentary in late 2005. They have just finished touring and are currently working on other projects/writing new album material. « hide |
