My Chemical Romance
Pop Punk

My Chemical Romance is a popular American rock band. The genre of music the band plays is often misinterpreted and highly debated. However, vocalist Gerard Way refers to their music as "violent pop". The band cites their influences from other groups such as Thursday, Iron Maiden, the Smiths and the Misfits. The band members hail from Belleville and Kearny, New Jersey (except drummer Bob Bryar from Chicago, Illinois). Bassist Mikey Way coined the band's name from a book entitled Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance, by Irvine Welsh.

The band members hail from Belleville and Kearny, New Jersey (except drummer Bob Bryar from Chicago, Illinois). Bassist Mikey Way coined the band's name from a book entitled Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance, by Irvine Welsh.

Since forming almost five years ago, the group has managed to release two albums with a third in the works titled The Black Parade ( set to be released Oct. 24th 2006 ). In 2002, they released I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, a collection of songs recorded only three months after the band's initial formation. An admirable achievement definitely, but even more surprising was the reception the album received. Critically, it was lauded from many corners (and derided from many others) and led to support tours with established artists the likes of Thrice and Taking Back Sunday.

Signing to Reprise Records in 2003, the band set to work on their major label debut and released Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge the next summer. Eventually to go platinum, the album broke the band as a fully mainstream outfit, with hit singles 'Helena,' 'I'm Not Okay' and 'The Ghost of You' causing a stir on MTV and TRL alike. Together with bands like The Used, Panic! At The Disco et al., My Chemical Romance have received much scorn for their supposedly "emo" sound and image however with an ever-expanding fanbase, their apparent notoriety seems only to be helping them at this time. « hide
