Bones (USA-CA) SoThereWeStood2.5
To kick off the new year after a prolific 2014, Bones appears to have condensed a typical mixtape of his into what comes across as a sampler. All the hallmarks of the rapper's sound are present and accounted for throughout these six tracks, and not much else. As per usual, Bones listlessly raps over hazy ambient beats and vocal samples screwed beyond recognition. It might work well as an introduction to Bones for those overwhelmed by his extensive discography, but this standard affair is a bit of a regression for the rapper considering the sundry sound of Rotten (which was released only a month prior). Although he has a penchant for sporadically releasing new material, he might want to wait until he at least has some surprises for the already initiated before he risks putting out something this underwhelming again.

One of the earliest cases of a soundtrack that paved the way for the further development of
other genres. These two sprawling 20 minute pieces vividly paint the universe of the movie
in all its morbid beauty, and all while dabbling in the fields of drone, noise, dark
ambient, and industrial music long before each of those genres had been fully realized and
capitalized on, let alone connected together. To call this soundtrack "ahead of its time"
would be an understatement, as these sound collages of layers of unsettling environmental
ambiance and dismal noise pollution make up one of the most avant-garde exercises in the
entirety of film scores still to this day.

This is actually so derivative of so many outdated and immature musical concepts, that it's kind of comparable to a middle-aged man going back to middle school even though he graduated long ago, and then trying to join the basketball team and getting pissed that he's taller than the hoop itself. This is realistically a 1/5 on the grounds that there is no better example of the current regression in metalcore as a whole, but these guys deserve an extra increment for impressively being able to describe their own sound in the most inept way possible: "fusion between Meshuggah and Nickelback." - Austin Carlile

Honestly, either one of Departure Songs' two discs had more diversity and purposeful direction than this overly-seamless follow-up. There's only so much chest-swelling in a set of compositions that I can take before the whole thing becomes rather repetitive and the emotion is lost. The ambient layers are so over-powering that it sounds like a power-wash on the post-rock whispers.

Araabmuzik Electronic Dream2.5
Every single one of these dub-hop garage beat cuts begin with the same vocal sample of a women confirming that, "You are now listening to Araabmuzik", just in case listeners may have forgotten by the end of the track before. The annoying and stupidly repetitious nature of this may have been sort of a good idea if this was the type of music that was commonly released as singles and played on radio stations. At least that way there would be no doubt that you are indeed hearing a song from Araabmuzik, but it's just so unnecessary and makes the setup of these songs so cyclical. This is especially true when a hype-inducing statement like that makes promises of a fulfilling experience in every song that this collection of practice sessions that play out more like warm ups can't keep. Electronic Dream is decent electronic music with a hip hop swagger about it, but it's ultimately not satisfactory enough to warrant any returning listens.

They seriously have this dreary and depressive tone of neo-soul music down to a science, that much is clear. However, there's virtually no dynamic range -- to the what could potentially be a great signature sound -- showcased on this. At about the halfway point, this can turn into a draining and almost exhausting trudge through the murkiest waters of downcast R&B. While it's more soul-inspired than PBR&B, and has nailed the right amount of moodiness for this kind of music, the saturated and dismal pace might make you want to grab some caffeine rather than the cleanex.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!3.5
Clocking in at an unusually short 53 minutes for Godspeed You! Black Emperor, 'Allelujah! rDon't Bend! Ascend!, the band's first outing since 2002 is a bit underwhelming, respecially after a 10 year waiting period. Only four tracks long, consisting of two longer r20 minute epics that aren't really new material but reworkings of unreleased songs played on rtour as far back as 2003, and two shorter 6 minute "drone" tracks, 'Allelujah! spends rfar too much time on the drone side of things -which seems a bit forced to begin with - and rit comes at the price of memorable instances on the album, different instances, or a good ramount of instances in general for that matter. This music lacks the grand and sprawling rfeel of their previous efforts to suit the track lengths, a clear direction of its themes to rcompliment its ambition, and the variation of different musical elements to form distinct rmusical passages. Because of this, it doesn't do much to push Godspeed's sound in any new rdirection, and the album seems to struggle with presenting its themes as clearly yet rcryptically as previous albums from the band have. Still though, this is a Godspeed record rin every way, deep as an ocean and intriguing as ever for every reason fans would expect it rto be, even if it's an admittedly lackluster record in comparison to their earlier work.

HEALTH Max Payne 34.0
HEALTH has created a soundtrack that beautifully blurs the line between score music and music you would find on an official album from the band. As a band, HEALTH works stunningly as composers, perfectly finding a way to match their music's signature sound with the attitude of the Max Payne series, while pushing their sound in new directions and showing off their composing skills in how well they comfortably adapt to the score music format as well. This is a sweeping soundtrack that has a cinematic flow with an identifiable introduction, climax, and conclusion, much like the video game's narrative itself. The score track dedicated to each unique level introduces the chapter to listeners by setting a distinct tone and then surrounding and immersing listeners by masterfully conveying the mood and even scenery of the game only through music alone. The soundtrack matches the visuals of the game and equates to the personality of Max Payne's cynical hero character well, ranging from disorienting spasms of the distorted color schemes from a drugged-out haze, to looming and brooding piano symphonies that wallow in feelings of a mournful past, and violent, vengeful wails of noisy feedback over guitars that chug like bullets being pumped out of an assault rifle, and tribal jungle drums that pound like a racing heartbeat in the feverish overcast of the atmosphere in the setting of a hectic Brazil.

Grizzly Bear Shields4.5
Just how much Shields shows all the possible places that Grizzly Bear can take
their sound is truly something to behold. They're very exploratory artists, finding a
place to firmly plant their sound where they can cast a line out to delve into other
areas. Shields has a consistent central texture that is earthy and organic, yet its
vast atmosphere is flourishing with the decorative color scheme of baroque pop,
which makes for a contrast that is distinct and works. Shields is many things;
it's artsy, colorful, rustic, rocking, deep, psychedelic, and it all works together well
because Grizzly Bear layers all these elements with remarkable craft in a way that is
above all, ridiculously hooky and infectious.

Matchbox Twenty North3.0
What's really interesting about North is how it embodies vintage early 2000's
contemporary pop rock and makes that sound still consistently work as well as it did 10
years ago. This is pop for grey skies, with a bleak enough production to appeal to post-
grunge and alternative rock audiences as much as Matchbox Twenty used to in their prime, but
loaded with enough snappy and catchy hooks to find a home on the pop charts. The end result
is an album that showcases the band refining their sound with their increasing maturity,
resembles something like a combination between Coldplay and Maroon 5, and is a recommendable
album for anyone looking for a pop rock record with a more somber atmosphere. The Fray
should take notes.

Demi Lovato Demi2.5
Poor Demi. Like all former Disney child stars, she's grown up and desperately wants
to make adult music with the other female pop stars and be taken seriously. After
the awkwardly dark approach she attempted to mixed results on the introspective
pop album that was Unbroken, it's clear that Lovato still desires to make a
"personal album" by simply naming it after herself, and to do so she is now trying
the angle of maturity as opposed to angst. Unfortunately though, while it's still a
step in the right direction, maturity for Lovato means aspiring to sound just like all
of her other contemporaries on the market. Though despite not being original,
Demi is undoubtedly a pop album. Gleaming with glossy and polished
production, but still decently catchy all the same, and it's all about the voice and the
hooks anyway. However, it's a real shame that Lovato was much better at
commanding the energetic summer pop rock anthems of her debut than she is
leading the mediocre choruses here. That happy music was a lot more fun and
exhilarating than anything off this as well. Another flaw about Demi is how
strangely forced everything feels; from the hooks tirelessly being pushed upon
listeners, to Demi's very overdone and forced vocal delivery. She could use some
restraint, and a new source of inspiration if she really wants to stand out as much as
the impression she gives on this album lets on.

Paramore Paramore2.5
It's really a matter of personal taste when it comes to whether or not the
experimentation on Paramore's self titled album will alienate you or attract you. In
my personal opinion, I think that all of the styles delved into here work very well
with each other, and that the amount of diversity that's present on this makes for
the most fun, cohesive, adventurous, colorful, distinguished, theatrical,
accomplished, ambitious, and overall interesting album that Paramore has ever
made. The ideas and directions that are embraced here find all sorts of different
methods to breathe much needed fresh air into the alternative rock/pop punk genre
while remaining focused, but at the same time, it's understandable how this music
can be seen as a loss of identity for the group, and polarizing to some fans because
of that.

Steven Wilson Insurgentes3.5
As to be rationally expected, Steven Wilson's debut solo album Insurgents isn't terribly different from a standard album by his band Porcupine Tree. It's essentially a Porcupine Tree record with Wilson completely at the helm and in charge of everything, - which does allow for an abundance of guest spots from other prog icons - but this is no way makes the quality and effort put into the album inferior to that of which is found on a PT album. In fact, Insurgentes proves just how much as a strong handle Wilson has on his progressive rock style even when he's working on his own, and it's impressive how much impeccable detail put into the songs is accomplished here by one man alone; comparable to the work of Trent Reznor even. This is a collection of complex, winding, and immersive soundscapes that are even more submerged in Wilson's personality than some of Porcupine Tree's music. Insurgentes possesses all of the quality of a typical Porcupine Tree album, even if it isn't an atypical effort from Wilson.

Muse The 2nd Law2.0
Sort of like an electronic opera, The 2nd Law is an over-dramatic, and at times over-
produced exercise in Muse's regular neo-prog symphonies that soar to the rafters, with an
additional handful of tracks heavily based in primarily dubstep-inspired electronics.
Naturally, this makes the The 2nd Law a very unbalanced and incohesive album, as Muse
makes efforts to tread waters unfamiliar to them while sticking to the territory they know
best, but fail to find a central ground to connect their experiments and their definitive
qualities. And with genres as drastically different from each other as dubstep and symphonic
rock, the result is an uneven collection of contrasting elements and sounds that don't
compliment each other or even work too well together for that matter. Though the execution
and presentation of Muse's ideas on The 2nd Law is clumsy, the tracks are still
somewhat interesting and enjoyable for what they are. The guitar tracks provide the grand
arena rock sound Muse has established for themselves, and while the synth-laden dance music-
infused songs are train wrecks for the most part, there is still something of a peculiar
entertainment to be found in that they display Muse's most severe change to their sound yet.
Overall, the most respectable trait about this album is how it mainly shows that Muse are
always trying to push their sound in new directions, even if they're largely unsuccessful in
doing so.

Not the U2, Coldplay, The Fray, and 30 Seconds to Mars circle jerk you'd expect from
them based on their first two efforts; surprising as that may seem. While this album
is a huge boost in maturity for them, it's still a pretty colorful affair, except this
time the canvas has been dyed with more sophisticated and slick tones as opposed
to the bright and overtly loud ones they started out wearing. However, in the future,
they're going to need a lot more personal soulfulness in their melodies to sustain
and shade in those polished-to-the-point-of-glistening stadium-sized hooks they
map out on this strong turnaround point of a junior release; but hell, they've
already been doing that much better than Kings of Leon anyway.

The rapping on here itself isn't anything to write home about, but the real appeal
about this mixtape is how unique the production is. These textures are as lite as diet
yogurt and soft as a cloud, and the atmosphere is absolute lithium; resulting in
some of the most serene ambient beats in the independent hip hop scene. This is
impressively engineered for an indie release, and the production value sounds of a
much more professional quality than any of Main Attrakionz comtemporary MCs.
They don't sound like they're rapping over these atmospheric beats, because the
songs on the mixtape are layered so cohesively that it sounds like they're
completely surrounded and immersed within the music like they should. This gives
this mixtape a level of finesse that shows great potential for Main Attrakionz and
makes it an exemplary release for other aspiring idependent rappers/producers in
hip hop's internet age.

Sly, sensual chillout music fit for a lounge high in the snowy mountains. It also
struts off this jazzy boldness that makes for hypnotizing trip hop music that doesn't
focus too much on being entrancing, but rather more on packing enough character
and personality to accentuate its stylistic alure. If Torrini, Bjork, and Sigur Ros are
any evidence, the Icelandic really have a knack for knowing how to create vast and
immersive soundscapes that have eletronic-based atmospheres, but feel as organic
as a nature-made monument. That aside though, this album is so intoxicating that
every song on here could be a possible contender for a main title theme in a James
Bond flick.

Never before on a soundtrack have I heard ambient music with an atmosphere this monolithic
and immense. These are gripping, suspenseful, tense, and suffocating compositions that
rapidly rise in tension up into the void above before they wither away into the unnerving
calm of bleak quietness and even chilling silence. The tracks perfectly toggle and
transition between beautifully spacious and complacent meditative music, and breathlessly
chest-crushing eruptions of noise both as claustrophobic and vastly deep as the perpetual
space that the film takes place in.

He then proceeds to put backmasked Bruce rSpringsteen records into your stereo and turns the volume up until your windows break and ryour eardrums burst. In all the chaos, urban hysteria, and abrasive noise, it's about half ran hour later that you realize you've been stripped bare, left for dead at the back of a 7-rEleven in GA, and are covered in plastic wrap with "FUCK YOU THINK I FUCK THIS FOR" rscribbled across your stomach in black sharpie. That being said, AOTY for sure.

Cunningly seductive industrial tones from the darkest corners and sleakest textures
of synthpop are still seeping from Depeche Mode's music this late into the group's
influential career. This is a very mature album that's aged well like fine wine, and
mainly focuses on their brand of lusty and erotic sex soundtracks that have a slow
burn, which strangely isn't awkward in the least bit coming from men in their fifties
because Depeche Mode have still got the moves. They've proven that they can still
stay relevent and effective with themes as heated as the one's found throughout
this album because of this transcendent suave they possess. Though, the album is a
bit uneven. It's really an album's worth of songs with slow and sensual heartbeats,
which doesn't give much in the way of sonic variation or speed differentiation. It
would have been nice to at least have a few of the sophisticated new wave dance
tunes for the clubs that Depeche Mode is known and praised for making - and has
continued to show they're still able to produce at this point in their careers on their
last few albums in the 2000s - to balance out the abundance of lounge tracks, and
get the blood pumping at a quicker and funkier pace here and there.

The Knife Shaking the Habitual3.5
Shaking the Habitual sees The Knife delving further into much more avant-garde industrial influences rather than electro-industrial ones. Showing inspiration from the likes of Current 93, Coil, Einst?rzende Neubauten, and Throbbing Gristle, The Knife is experimenting with some of the most fleshed out compositions they've ever produced. While they've retained their tribal percussion, The Knife has toned down the IDM and tech house indie-dance anthems, and has opted for a more ominous approach with two discs worth of elongated songs that sprawl over disturbing dark ambient droning, and the unsettling progressive builds of caustic minimal techno. These assets combined should prove to make Shaking the Habitual an album with much longevity if The Knife decides to take another six year break in between albums.

Tyler, the Creator Wolf2.5
Tyler is kind of stuck in this area where he wants to try new things but can't quite
completely let go of his old habits, and this really shows through on Wolf. The
typical provocative nature of the lyrics comes off as really forced at this point, and
its background purpose as a production showcase really doesn't make too much
sense since Tyler's numbing profanity directs all the attention to himself when he
speaks. However, the progressions, as subtle as they may be, are definitely
noticeable here. This is a solid hip hop album that delivers the thrills fans desire
and expect from OFWGKTA, but it's nowhere near as dingy as Goblin or
Bastard were. This shows that Tyler's comfortably moving out of his dark corner
of a safe zone, and truly creating in a broader and more confident light. Even if he
may not just yet be comfortable with shedding the skin of his former self and fully
thematically embracing his new lifestyle.

Swans We Rose from Your Bed with the Sun in Our Head4.0
Man, do Swans love dishing out epic double live albums, it's like it's either two discs or
no discs with them. I didn't think it was possible to flesh out the brutal and engulfing
emotion in the songs on My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky even more than
it already was, but the 23 minute live rendition of "No Words/No Thoughts" proves otherwise.
The live preview demos of a handful of songs from the then-upcoming album The Seer
provide those sample compositions with a raw and un-mastered edge, and gives a viscerally
unsettling sense of foreboding to the album as a whole. If We Rose from Your Bed with the
Sun in Our Head
shows anything, it's that Swans can do no wrong in concert, and further
proves that the band's live performances have a masterful capability of conveying the
experience's power and staying effect through the album format just as well.

Circle of Dust Disengage4.5
Circle of Dust was fortunate enough to nail their signature sound and what made them a band
that stood out in two completely different music scenes, but because it was their debut and
was of course made when they were so underground that they lacked any attention whatsoever,
the limitations of the technology at the time, and their budget at the time, prevented their
self titled debut album's genre-bending music from sounding in the best condition and
quality that it could have. The times are now much more in Circle of Dust's favor for
Disengage though, they aren't just starting out anymore, they're experienced
professionals on this album who have a grasp on what they're doing, and an idea of what was
most successful with their fans. After their sophomore effort Brainchild which saw
the band limiting themselves to thrash metal only, Disengage is a triumphant return
to what worked best for the band on their debut album, except this time it's played with
more finesse, has much better production, and a clearer sense of what direction the band
wants to go with the album. This is a sound that's familiar, yet an advancement upon itself
in every way. It's the band much more heavier, more melodic, more chaotic, and more brooding
than before, an improvement in each category Circle of Dust aims to excel in, and
indubitably does. This album also shows the industrial metal genre keeping with conventional
themes that are well distinguished already, but actually progressing them in a unique
direction instead of replicating them by imitating the artists who originally founded the
sound.
Circle of Dust Brainchild2.5
Brainchild sees Circle of Dust ditching the perfect balance between industrial's
heaviness and Christian rock's melodies for a much more thrash metal-inspired sound. This is
music that channels Slayer influences, but not much else other than that. This is simply
mediocre thrash metal music; it's one dimensional and is really only concerned with that one
genre alone, - it's hardly industrial music either with a significant lack of electronic
elements - and with very poor production quality that's vastly inferior to the production on
the band's debut album before it, Brainchild makes Circle of Dust sound like a
second-rate Ministry ripoff more than a band that proudly takes after Nine Inch Nails and
Skinny Puppy. Circle of Dust have definitely opted for going much more heavier here, but in
doing so they've abandoned the Christian/industrial blend that made them such a unique and
special group in both the Christian and industrial rock music scenes.
Circle of Dust Circle of Dust4.0
Christian industrial metal is a genre that's as scarce as they come, and it's understandable why that is. The often violent attitude and nihilistic perspective that's common in industrial music is the polar opposite of Christian music's hopeful outlook and loving spirit, but Circle of Dust's self titled debut album found a way to marry these two opposites together in a way where they brought out the best in one another. Christian music had already become more flexible to the amounts of aggression the genre could display, with artists using alternative metal as a vehicle for their holy themes, but Circle of Dust brought how heavy Christian music could be to an all new level. Before this album, Christian metal hadn't been introduced to the harsh electronic assault and chugging riffs of industrial rock, and Circle of Dust provide the genre with a modern metal take on industrial music that draws as much pointers from Nine Inch Nails as it does Skinny Puppy. On the other end of the spectrum, the album has harnessed the soulful harmonies Christian music is known for, and has supplied industrial music with very symphonic and melodic choruses that contrast the gritty production nicely. Industrial music has never been this melodic, and Christian music has never been this heavy, making Circle of Dust a boundary-pushing album.

Sigur Ros Kveikur4.0
Any fan who has grown wearisome of the very light and high-spirited fluffiness of
their previous two albums should find a lot to love in Kveikur. Sigur Ros has
made a partial return to the bleak and icy soundscapes of ( ), and while it is at times
darker and more somber than anything they've put out in the last decade, this
album has as much sonic diversity as ?g?tis byrjun. Some tracks venture back
into instances of sweeping melancholia, but at the same time it retains the
whimsical joy of Takk..., and the nostalgic innocence of Me? su? ? eyrum vi?
spilum endalaust
, and hell, it even provides a stark contrast to all of this through
some harsh blasts of distortion. But what's most admirable about Kveikur - as is
with every Sigur Ros album - is how seamlessly and beautifully everything comes
together to forge an all-around mystifying experience.

The Weeknd Kiss Land2.0
Abel's melodies here aren't as varied, aching, and organic on Kiss Land as they were
on the mixtapes. Furthermore, while his range is still impressive, he's still showing no
signs of adopting any form of restraint, and this results in a vocal approach that is
identical to a numbing extent. The album's production isn't as raw as the mixtapes, and has
a much more cleaner and glossier sheen. While this makes sense seeing as how it's his major
label debut, I think this indicates a complete departure from what made him stand out from
the rest of his contemporaries in the first place. His mixtape trilogy was gritty, brooding,
and bluntly sexual R&B with darker alternative music leanings. It's plainly obvious that
Kiss Land sounds utterly processed and sterilized in comparison. The songs are set on
a bigger scale no doubt, but outside of the context of comparing this music to his previous
outings, the general atmosphere of the record sounds neutered, and musically, the songs are
like pack-mules in how lumbering, tedious, and over-encumbered they are with homogenized yet
jarringly contrasting layers.
