If I'm going to compare the new stuff toThe Cold Vein (arguably the best rap album ever recorded), I have to give it a 2 - it doesn't even come close. Judging it on its own merits (which is reasonably considering just how important El-P was to the last album, I give it a 3. It's a solid "underground" record. El-P's absence is obvious throughout but Vast and Vordul's rhymes and their combined flow make it an enjoyable listen.

Terminal Function Measuring the Abstract2.5
Terminal Function can be described rather succinctly as Meshuggah with jazz breaks. It's interesting for a while but the novelty wears off eventually and you're left with yet another polyrhythmic djent band. These guys aren't lacking in chops but it'd be nice to see them use their talent to create something less derivative

It's old school balls out aggressive brutal death metal occasionally contrasted by the occasional slower doom-death sections which help sustain focus throughout the 50 or so minutes of musicrCompare Deathhammer to Deicide's latest release - both are no frills death metal - one is from a once legendary band who've been coasting for years; the other has produced album after album of outstanding music throughout his career and Deathhammer is no exception: it's a superior example of pure aggression - the way it sounded when both Benton and van Drunen sounded back before anyone came up with all the fusions and hybrid genres that we have today.
